Anyone catch Carroll's explanation on the play call?

He was going to call 1 pass play, then run on 3rd, call timeout (at .01), then run on 4th.

That gives the Seahawks 3 shots at the endzone, and eats up the maximum amount of clock since they can call timeout with 1 second after 3rd down.

Contrasted with running the ball on 2nd down. If he doesn't get it, they have to call timeout. And then you have to pass the ball on 3rd, and can't control the clock and a sack probably ends the game. Then you run the ball on 4th, and leave time on the clock for Pats who only need a fg.

In the end, they were calling 2 runs and 1 pass. This was just the smart way to do it. (I certainly didn't think so at the time. But then he explained it, and I was "ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhh."

Except of course if they throw the ball directly into the middle of the field for an interception to lose the Super Bowl.

Sometimes the obvious thing is also the smart thing. It's one yard. You have Lynch and a timeout. It's the Super Bowl. Run the ****ing ball and stop trying to be the smartest guy in the room, Pete.

The NFL is too PC to do 1/2 "naked". Nothing wrong with football, beer and boobs, but........

Do people accept at least that the proper plan was

Pass-Run-(timeout)-Run
or
Run-(timeout)-Pass-Run

I think it's more the fact that the pass he did call was dangerous. Even a fade probably would have been better if they were deadset on passing. The last thing you want on 2nd down is a turnover.

I agree with Cris Collingsworth tbh

the best HB in the league just got you four and a half of the five yards you needed on first down. if he can't get the last two feet on three tries, then so be it.

I ain't no NFL coach but you have to get the points. I think I heard that of 17 attempts at 1yd this year, Lynch made it in 14 times...

any throw or pitch needed to be to the outside. end of story. the pats were clearly in a zone defense. i learned in pop warner that any slant route ran against anything but man coverage generally doesn't work.

agree with the room, pass was the right call but what a stupid pass to call. especially since this matthews guy has been catching balls over his corner all day, fade to the back of the end zone to him, let him have his one chance at being super bowl hero, then run it two plays up the gut with lynch if that doesnt work.

hindsight is 20/20 though, i guess.

It's kinda crazy if you stop and think about it, but 60 second ads this year went for $8 million (30 second ones were, unsurprisingly, $4 million)

So that fact that a free game (Clash of Clans) apparently makes enough money that it could not only afford that exorbitant price, but also afford to get an A-Lister like Liam Neeson to star in it is pretty crazy. The times are indeed, a changin'

If this had been us, I'd probably never be able to watch another football game again. I'm not even a Seahawks fan and I'm still sick over it.

This season:

63% of passes from the 1 yard line resulted in TDs. Zero interceptions.

58% of runs from the 1 yard line resulted in TDs. Not sure of fumble stats but I have to imagine there was more than zero.

As stated earlier, Lynch was 1/6 this season on runs from the 1 yard line.

And as Wally explained, it made sense for time management. Patriots have almost no chance of grabbing the ball and coming back.

Bad actual *pass* call? Maybe. Great play by Butler? Absolutely. It certainly wasn't placed where it needed to be, which was in Lockette's gut.

Long live St. Thomas Brady.
