My life changed forever in a big way today.

In the wee hours of the morning, I checked the time on my watch. I didn’t have to be awake for another half hour, so I put my arm around my wife.

I felt my son kick for the first time.

I had seen images of him in the ultrasound. I’ve watched the picture of him moving around inside his mommy. But today, I FELT him for the first time.

I smiled the biggest smile I’ve ever smiled.

Driving home from work this afternoon, rain falling, I thought about how much the world has changed since I was a child. How different it will be for my son growing up than it was for me.

I thought about how scary it must be for a parent to let go on the first day of school, the first sleep over, and when your baby moves away for college.

I guess that’s where faith comes in. Knowing that there will come a day when you’re no longer around for your child. Knowing that the world will change in ways that none of us can possibly imagine. But having the faith that God will provide in all things and be watching over, even when we no longer can.

That no matter what we do in this life, tomorrow is never guaranteed, so all we can do is be the best friend, the best brother, the best husband, the best educator I can be each day that I have.

You will always worry about your child. Until your last breath.
That means you did it right.

Got my Omicron booster and flu shot this morning.
Gonna just take it slow on couch.
Drink lots of water too!

I just had my allergy shot and while it wasn't as painful as the 6 trigger point injections in by lower back last week, I am good with being stuck until next week lol.

So my daughter, who now lives in Kingston Ontario, was told she is a finalist for a cancer Research Technician job at Columbia University.
They said it was now with HR. Not sure what that means but it looks like she has a good chance. Can anyone guess what HR would look at?
She asked me to help look for apartments in NY. Does anyone have any recommendations? Is Street Easy a safe place to look? She is hoping to stay around $2,000 per month.

HR is just there to do a background check, make sure references check out, and verify employment eligibility. The actual hiring decision is made by the department she'll be working for, HR just checks it out to make sure there are no red flags before giving them the go ahead.

Thank you. She is getting excited and I am trying to tell her that nothing is finalized until she gets an offer or a rejection. I am just happy she made it this far, just graduating this year.

Every HR department handles hiring differently but in my experience they are likely finalizing the offer to the candidate (I hope it is your daughter!) and also working with their immigration lawyer to start any paperwork that is needed (not familiar with the process between the US and Canada).

In my company onboarding takes about 2 weeks from once the offer is signed

Checked my boss in for his Southwest flight. Clicked submit as soon as the clock turned 24 hours prior to departure, it said I was still too early. Immediately clicked again and got confirmation, but for boarding position B59. :skeptic:

Oh but for a mere $50 you could upgrade to boarding position A1-A15. :skeptic::skeptic::skeptic::skeptic:

I hate flying.

It's been a while since I've flown Southwest, but I think that A1-A15 is business class, and then there's early bird check in for a slightly lower cost. I've always done early bird check in. You haven't been able to get an A position without it for at least 10 years, at least on any flight I went on.

Lol it's been at least seven years since I've flown anywhere, so I'm definitely out of touch.

Just crazy how they monetize every aspect of it these days. What's next... in the event of cabin depressurization, please insert credit card to receive an oxygen mask?:help:

I flew Delta to/from California on my recent trip and it was fine. We sat right over the wing, on a window, and being barely above avg height i was comfortable enough in terms of the seating. I think it was considered main cabin too.

A few years back i stayed on campus with my daughter who was part of a research study. We put in for a drawing to get into the student housing building and we got picked. Still had to pay thousands but it worked out better. I recall several members here who donated, will never forget it actually.

The area is quite nice imo. You see it on a map and see Harlem right around the corner and fear the worst, but it’s really not bad at all. We looked at some rooms for rent but costs were insane. I think you’ll have to look a bit further out unfortunately, but i hope you get lucky and find a reasonable place. They still exist!

Edit- my brother lived in park slope for a few years and it was great. Semi affordable all things considered. Every time i visited it was easy to get there and park. Plenty of subway stops around.

I've only been on Delta once, but it wasn't bad IIRC. I only go Jetblue these days (best prices and they go into a lot of airports including Boston) and choose my seat in advance. I like the idea of Southwest's free-for-all boarding but it's not worth in in practice because normal fares get stuck in the back of the line anyway. I have the JetBlue mastercard so I get a free checked bag on all flights anyway, no point to changing airlines. But otherwise I did really like Alaska Airlines the one time I went with them. American is hit-or-miss depending on what route you're on and what plane they give you (I've been on their smaller and older planes where they don't even have a damn TV screen to watch). United is the worst though, bar none. I will not fly with them unless it's an emergency and I have no other choice. Shitty planes, shittier service.

I use to fly for work all the time and was on a southwest binge for a while only because it made doing expenses a little easier for a few different reasons, mainly how they allowed 2 free checked bags.. worked perfect checking my work pack out of tools etc, and obviously all my hotel luggage. I always made sure I checked in the minute I could and I always got A1-A10 (business classn) It worked out great if I had enough time in advance to find the right flight(s).

Sometimes I'd get sent out to Cali on very short notice, like less then a 24 hour notice so southwest alot of times wasn't a possibility. In that case I would always look for Delta flights and while the company (obviously) paid for my flights; 'me being me', I always spent the extra $40-50 bucks on the one 'long flight' out of my own pocket to nab a window seat and something that didn't have me sitting way in the back of the plane.

In the industry, Delta is known as the best US Domestic carrier, probably British Airways as the best International carrier. I worked on Continental Airlines jets my entire career, even after the merger with United. Continental brought the newest and best maintained fleet in the business to the merge,United brought the oldest and most neglected. Why? Continental had a management team and workforce that worked together, the culture and environment was healthy and successful, winning multiple JD Power Awards for excellence. United brought a looooong history of management/labor strife and a workforce that fought amongst itself. It was awful. That culture poisoned the merger, and the company more represents legacy United than legacy Continental. Continental's new CEO spearheaded the merger back then,he was a lawyer and he decided the United name would go forward with the Continental colors. The United name empowered the United people to believe it was a takeover,it wasn't,and their hideous culture won out. The Continental CEO was subsequently fired. I also worked on Southwest Airlines jets as they have no mechanics in Boston. We viewed them as as a flying version of Greyhound buses, the interiors were always rundown and their aircraft always carried more open maintenance problems throughout the day as they only had mechanics at hubs. A comparison,Southwest flies 737 Aircraft, and a 737-800 of Continental would carry 0-1 open maintenance problems on average,a Southwest 737-800 would carry 5.

Congrats. Try to remember that the problem with kids is that they grow up too fast.
