OT: Summer Fitness Thread

So probably doesn't sound like a big deal to you guys but I've been mixing in cardio lately. Yesterday I ran, albeit slowly (4.6), for 30 minutes straight, I wasn't even really tired probably could have done 40 or 45 minutes, if not more. It was quite the accomplishment for me because I've never been able to run more than 10 or so. In fact, before I lost weight I got to the point where I felt extremely winded after 3 (!!!) minutes at the same speed.

Have you done any work with Kettlebells? They're fan freaking tastic for resistance cardio especially if you hate running as much as I do.

You are better off doing HIIT. 15-20 mins. 2 min walk and 1 min run/sprint.

Good stuff! There are two ways to challenge yourself - longer distances or higher speeds. Personally, I find 3-4 mile runs where you’re finishing exhausted to be the most challenging and rewarding as a workout. Two options there too - pyramid or intervals. For intervals I like 20 sec sprint / 40 sec recovery jog or 35-40 seconds sprint / 80 seconds recovery jog.

Aren't Kettlebells weights? I haven't. I'm not a huge running fan still but I can see why people who are actually in shape don't find them torturous like I used to.

What you listen is very important. I’m very meticulous about my cardio playlist.

Anything can be torturous, depending on the movement and the weight. Simply swinging them Russian-style is one thing. Swinging a 70 pound kettle, American style? Different animal. Or doing lunges with the kettle over your head. Not fun at all.

What the hell is Russian style and what's American style? I assume Russian style means with a vodka shot in one hand.

Anyone into running?

I started running a couple of years ago (in addition to all of my other workouts, hockey, some fasting and meal planning) and I average about 10-12 miles a week. It's really had a positive effect on my physique and mental clarity.

At 40 y/o and working a desk job it's helped keep me lean. Definitely recommend adding it to your workout regimen, whether is a few mile jog, longer run, intervals/sprinting on treadmill. Helps the cardio/burning of fat.

Also have run in some local 5K charity events and they are a lot of fun, and I had no idea how I well I stacked up against those in my age group.
Have always run a little and since losing some weight and getting over some knee pain, have started to mix it in more. Recently made a conscious effort to increase the distance and have started to go from 2-3 a run to 3-4 a run during the week and 7-8 on weekends.

Hoping to be at double digits by the end of summer, but we'll see how it goes. Have been pretty faithful to cardio 60-90 a day but gets harder to get that heart rate up as your heart health gets better.

can't standing running either, i'm lucky enough to be down the block from an outdoor inline hockey rink....no better cardio than popping in the earbuds and skating and firing the pill for an hour or so.

Yes, and generally people do not have healthy/stable enough shoulders to be doing them.
That is an accurate assessment. I guess had I not received proper coaching when I completely redone the way that I work out, I probably would have never done them either. But so many of our lifts are overhead, that it requires proper coaching and proper training.

Yikes. Bears... that one dude took down a small Mountain Lion in Colorado which was epic.

There are bears by me but only on occasion they come that far south. Cant imagine. I was almost clipped by 3 deer jumping over a fence after I spooked them once though. So close i could smell the musk. That would've been a story.

Lately I've just gone on YT and searched Metallica live. Is there heavier adrenaline-pumping music? Sure.

By the way Hetfield has aged a ton the past year.
