I love running. Part of the reason I'm not more muscular is I get "lazy" and default to running 3-5 miles a day over lifting, especially in the spring and summer when you get plenty of sunshine and don't have to wear 37 layers because of wind and temperature.

The key for me as I get older (late 30s) for running is the stretching. Do not take shortcuts and skip out either pre or post run, it'll hurt the actual run and recovery. I had a g/f who despised when I went running she never understood why it took 2-3 hours with the actual run + warmup lap+ pre and post stretching and I told her it's so you don't get hurt, went right over her head.

I used to run 16-24 miles a week when I lived right by my job, but some days I have to be up by 5-5:30 so the morning runs don't happen.

It's a huge part of my life and I miss 16-24 miles as I'm no down to 3-12 per week and is one of the reasons I am looking to change jobs (along with the stress and lack of sleep) by end of summer/early fall.

I also love making a mix and putting new songs on a little Sansa clip I have.

Kids here don’t know what “a little Sansa clip” is...

Hah! I can't run with an iphone. I've tried. It's too heavy with the case and armpad. Makes me think of Jimmy Page and how his shoulder is permanently lower from all those years of playing his guitar with that posture.

So I'm a little concerned. Yesterday I had my birthday and gained if you're counting from morning to night 6 pounds or the better way to count it from morning until morning 5 pounds. I didn't even eat that poorly. I ate a handful of chicken wings and then a moderate amount of Korean BBQ at night. I've weighed myself almost every day for the last 11 months and I think the most I've gained in a day before was 2 or 3 pounds. I came from a 4-day trip recently where I ate like shit and ate a lot and gained 4 pounds in FOUR days. WTF? The only thing I can think of was that I lost weight quickly the last couple of days because I did cardio more than usual and it was some water weight that I gained back and my true weight gain is from the pre-workout weight.

Some really specific regime info here! Very 2019 Instagram worthy. I’ll bet a conditional 3rd rounder that the results do not match the lead up. Keep it simple, you don’t have to emulate page 8 of that health magazine. Same goes with diet, the specificity is so funny - trying very, very hard (in a most basic b look at me way)...ask yourself who are you fooling in the mirror? Come on man...

Water retention, perhaps?

If you binge high sodium foods (i.e wings and Korean bbq) it will have you storing excess water and have you bloated for a bit.

Once you cut the salt, that water weight should be lost pretty quickly.

Thanks, I guess the concern is that I've never watched the salt. That's just not been part of my diet. I eat Korean BBQ somewhat regularly. Plus I wouldn't even say I binged it. This is some wacky outlier despite not doing anything crazy. But it's probably a water retention issue. I just don't understand why it's such a big jump. How is it that when I was on vacation and ate a bunch of shit worse than I did yesterday and ate more of it, in four days I've gained less? Sometimes there are mysteries but this one is a bit crazy. Should I be concerned about my health?

Hard to say without seeing your calorie intake and everything else.

Maybe you sweated out more water on vacation and burned more calories? Not sure. Some people are very sedentary and others are active on vacation. I’m the latter not sure about you.

I don’t really see why you should be concerned about your health based on what I’ve read

I did walk around quite a bit one of the days and there was a period of time where I had an almost 24 hour fast. But I broke that fast by eating as much food as I've eaten in a year and then topped it off with ice cream. I really didn't eat that much yesterday. I go to Korean BBQ semi-regularly as I said and usually eat more of it than I did yesterday, though it was very late. A few weeks ago I ate probably twice the amount and gained a very normal pound and a half to two pounds, though it was earlier in the day. And the wings and stuff, I didn't binge on either. It's just a very strange outlier that I can't figure out. That's why I'm concerned.

It's mostly water and you'll be back to where you normally are within a week or so.

You're fine man. Don't beat yourself up over living your life.

I figure it's mostly water I guess it was just a bit alarming since in 11 months of weighing myself this is the biggest jump in a day I've had, beating my previous record jump by 2 pounds. And I didn't even eat that poorly.

Agree with @Filthy Dangles and @ZuccsFluffierFluffer that the likeliest answer is salt causing water retention (extra water from hydrating in this heat). I’m also not watching my salt intake too rigidly but I’m aware that it could cause some gain weight which is generally not difficult to dispose.

Hmmmm, heat does sound like something that could be a special case and explain why I haven't experienced this before, though this wasn't the hottest day.

Went for my first job since injuring my knee in January. Only 2.6 miles but the knee feels fine. Quads are sore as hell today tho. My cardio for the past 3 months has been walking and stair climbing, but the stair climbing hasn't been for durations long enough to have that muscle endurance I guess.

Life is for the living. You need to enjoy it. If you gained it from having some fun, you can also loose it quicky.

Also, sometimes looking at pounds is not a way to state that you are in shape.

I'm aware about the pounds thing, but within a day it actually matters since I didn't gain 5 pounds of muscle. Plus, I'm competitive and like quantifiable metrics. So there I am.

Weighing yourself every day is a mistake. Train hard, eat clean and check in at the end of every month.

See how you compete also. Increase in weight lifted, stamina, etc. Can’t recommend boxing, battle ropes, slams, carries, pull-ups, deadlifts and cleans enough. Benching is more for show than anything else. Just my two cents.

It's easy to get pretty rigid when it comes to your weight, how much you are lifting and looks, but if you really boil it down, in the end it's all about how you feel about yourself - It does more harm than good to assign numbers to it all on a daily basis.

Of course there is an importance to settings goals and keeping plans to achieve such goals, but try your best to enjoy the pursuit while keeping a balance in your life.

I think people say this a lot and I disagree. Sometimes it does stress me out a bit but if I didn't weigh myself every day and keep myself accountable I might have given up my diet a long time ago. It works for me.

I reckon it'd drive me mad. Especially if I just had a killer session and then proceed to weigh the same weight as yesterday.

It has sometimes. But at the same time, I think weight loss is more consistent than weight gain from muscle mass. It's hard not to lose weight if I do a decent amount of cardio.
