Question, would you rather pick up Bieksa for a second rounder, or pay somebody in free agency?

I think I'd rather keep the 2nd rounder. One year till he becomes a UFA and then what? $4.6 next year is probably cheaper than what a ufa will cost but next year we'll face the same question.

The ideal is to get a younger D with term or still RFA eligible in a deal involving Rychel. But then again so is me winning the lottery.

My guess at this point (purely speculation) - is the Jackets will move Arty straight up for a D-man.
I don't think the team wants to spend too much money - so they will largely use Arty's (salary and roster position) and make a trade for a D-man in that ~$4M range. I also don't think they want a contract much longer than a year or two. Don't think it will be a legit top pairing guy but more than likely a guy who plays 2nd pairing on a decent team.
I don't see them being active in top tier free agents (pretty thin with d-men anyways).
Could also be Cam but I think the center depth leads me to believe it will be Arty. Wouldn't be shocked if it happened as soon as today - maybe a pick or two moving around, if not today then in next week (again that's pretty much a given that before free agency starts they will want to get something done).

I agree. Keep the 2nd round pick.

You love your prospects don't you? To me if Jarmo can't find a roster player this weekend, everything that was talked about was just lip service. Too many other teams are making things happen. Is our squad good, sure, but good isn't going to cut it anymore. In this day and age if your standing still, you're losing.

Quoted from Spector:

EDMONTON JOURNAL: David Staples cites a report from colleague Jim Matheson claiming St Louis Blues defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk might be available, citing the high salary being taken up by other Blues defensemen Alex Pietrangelo and Jay Bouwmeester.

Might he be a Jackets target?

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Shattenkirk’s earning $4.25 million annually for the next two seasons, but is also coming off an all-star performance this season.

If he's on the market, without a doubt he'd be a target.

Depending on the price, definitely go after him if he is available.

This might require Jarmo to step out of his comfort zone, so it won't happen. He would look great here, but apparently we're just about standing pat and not doing anything this weekend. You don't win Cups standing on the sidelines watching everyone else make things happen.

It takes two to make a trade, and there haven't been a lot of top four defensemen moving around. Jarmo can't trade for things that teams don't want to trade.

Guys like Bieksa and Phaneuf (the only two defensemen I've consistently heard that are available) aren't the answer.

Wow, you need to calm down. Maybe switch to being a Bruins fan if you want crazy moves all done at once.

Spare me. I want a winner. This organization has been around for 18 years, it's time to do something to finally put it all together. Nowhere have I said to do something crazy. You can get a little aggressive if our prospect pool is as great as everyone seems to think it is. Put a package together that makes the other make the move.

I understand you have to have home grown prospects, it's a necessity. But if you've obviously got extra ammo and already somewhat stocked, use some of the surplus. I know everyone wants to see a winner, but when I see people fawn over prospects that might pan out, I see missed opportunities to actually improve the big club. Proven commodities will help the on-ice product immediately, prospects help fortify the future.

I don't disagree with the premise that we should be trading prospects for proven QUALITY commodities. I don't think Jarmo's sitting on his hands, either. Sweeney made it clear it would accept less to send Hamilton to the Western Conference (so we weren't even eligible). PHX had no intention of trading #3. Dion Phaneuf doesn't improve this team that much on the backend, and Nik Grossman or Kevin Bieksa are older, more expensive versions of what we already have in 5/6/7 defensemen.

Teams don't trade young, cost-controlled and somewhat experienced top four defenders often. Shattenkirk or Seabrook would be FANTASTIC players to add, but I have a great deal of doubt that they're available from STL and CHI. Prices are probably absurdly high, as well. Midsummer is when teams who need to cut cap make moves. Something will happen. I'm willing to be patient and trust Jarmo to make a move. If we're in September with the same team we currently have, there's cause to be displeased.

A little empathy for Kev.

In our history, I cannot recall ANY trade where we moved a highly-touted prospect for a player. We tend to let our prospects completely fall off the map and have no value before we move them.

Okay so what would you trade for Shattenkirk?

2 years left on his deal then its probably 7 mill give or take if he continues to perform.

If St L is moving him for cost reasons then obviously they don't want $ back or at least big $.

Next year's #1 and Rychel. Back off RD but he ain't coming cheaply.

Maybe Jenner and 2016 #1 or 2?

I cannot imagine him actually being on the market at his current contract.

Blues fans have expressed they'd want to see a 1C coming back, or at least a young center with a lot of potential. I'd think it'd have to be a combination of Rychel, Wennberg, and a 1st or 2nd next year at least.

I agree here. We don't seem to make the bold trade unless its forced upon us by a player (Nash, Carter on the way out) or the high priest (Carter on the way in). Nor do we tend to sign UFA's that can help. Budgetary reasons?

I think we are in good shape now but if a Shattenkirk could kick us up a couple levels quickly as we wait for Werenski to be ready we need to be willing to pay a price.

I'd do Wennberg and a 1 or 2. Give to get.
