The Hartnell thing is utterly and completely random and I love the guy, but getting out from under that contract would give us a ton of flexibility.

Not sure what "thing" you are referring to here but I tend to agree. At some point he is going to slow down and we'll be *****ing about his contract. Like with Cam, not many really want to trade him but to get the kind of guy we need on D it is going to cost. Sending him back to Nashville as part of a package for Jones would be ideal. But most likely a pipe dream.

Scott Hartnell is ten years younger than Jaromir Jagr. And more altruistic by nature.

It's more likely that he would lose his eye of the tiger than his foot speed in the triumph.

I agree about flexibility, but Hartnell has so huge positive impact. Trade Arty + Bourque (+ probably Atkinson) and send Clarkson to LasVegas and our flexibilty will be amazingly flexible :sarcasm: Keep Rychel

Trading a guy with that contract is not giving to get - you're clearly trying to kill two birds with one stone. It's hard enough to get a guy like Jones, including Hartnell's contract in a deal makes it twice as impossible.

The bad contract doesn't make a deal of any kind more likely. We already know that Hartsy fits in wonderfully here. Every other team in the league is going to hate the contract just as much, and have more uncertainty about whether he'll even fit. Maybe if we're a cap team, in the last year of the deal, when his salary is lower, we could unload him to a team trying to get to the floor. Other than that, he's going to be Mr. Jacket, and we'll enjoy it.

Bingo!
No team will give up a valuable asset for him now - now maybe at the deadline someone would value him differently.
He was extremely productive last season but the term (and dollars) do not make have a valuable trade chip unless you're trying to match up salaries.

Who knows? If a team needs a good top 6 F and has a surplus of talent elsewhere or is in win now mode it could happen. Never say never. Not advocating trading him but it is possible.

I'd like to see Zaar have a big summer, light it up in camp and make Atkinson trade bait for a defenseman. (Yeah. That WAS outta left field!)

Imagine how insufferable I'd be then. A 6th-round pick so unknown that he wasn't in any draft guides making the big squad....oh yeah, I'd be even more irritating.;)

Zarr is a good sleeper prospect. He has a wicked wrister. If he learns to play the boards, could have a NHL career (somewhere).

Isn't there a 2015-16 version of Melart and Hjarmalson (sp) that Jarmo plucked out of Europe and some folks are excited about?

Hanikainen. He was at the prospects camp i believe last offseason. Signed this season.

saw his on the mains..

Why not offer sheet Douggie Hamilton from boston 5-6 mill per season or something. If they match it then we offer sheet Krug?

If I were Boston, my next move after matching would be to offer sheet Calvert for around $3 or $3.5 mil a year. If Columbus matches, it severely damages the salary scale; if they don't, the only compensation is a (late) 2nd-rounder in 2016.

would they be able to afford a 3.5m 3rd liner?

Take Savard's LTIR credit and call it a day.

Or there's enough other guys with value around the league that they could create some wiggle room with (Chris Kelly, Marchand, Lucic).

This is the salary cap version of "The Nuclear Option." I prefer we save it until we can make a legitimate Cup run.
