I'm encouraged by Zibanejad. He was the sharpest so far this season and it paid off with TWO 5v5 goals, the slick Kreider-esque deflection and then the Kreider goal late. He explodes through the neutral zone going through two defenders to give Smith a nice feed on a break-in early in the game that could've been a goal. He put Laf on the breakaway with an off-the-boards pass. If he can start driving that line, it's a chance to get all four lines going.

Good game overall but Lindgren and Trouba remain fatal flaws with the team. I stand by what I said about Miller, but I am fine with him if he remains Fox's partner for the long-term.

We talk about Miller, but Trouba's body language is pathetic. Slumped shoulders, no intensity, and on for all 3 goals against. I commend him for his off ice charity work and he seems like a great guy, but he's a fraud on the ice. Only hits guys when they arent looking and doesnt set the physical tone for the team in front of Igor. It's why there are always uncovered opposing players there. It trickles down from the top.

Anyways, back to the good. Cuylle and Kakko are breaking out before our eyes. It doesnt matter who their center is. Cuylle looks like a much more physical replacement for Kreider long-term. And Kakko will never be a flashy player but he's just solid and gaining confidence. That line with Chytil centering will be a top 6 line for us in the next window.

Jones and Mancini are 1 for 1 replacements for Trouba and Lindgren, but we wtill badly need another top 4 lefty. Jones is a good player but I think his best role for this team is 3rd pair, with 2nd PP time.

I passed out after the 1st - this is a strange year so far in the NHL. Any of the top 4 in the Metro would be 1st place in three divisions aside from the Central. The Devils have played 4 more games than everyone else and lost all of them. The Rangers "appear" to be terrible but still should be top 3 in a VERY good Metro. Feels like the winds are changing a bit.
Looking into it, Det, Ott, and Buf should be absolutely ashamed of themselves.

Even with Brodzinski replacing Chytil our 3rd line has been our best line all year long. They get goals when we need them and they don't bleed goals against at all. So Cuylle and Kakko were definitely in my top 3 last night and Fox would be my other choice. Both 50 and 24 look like they could bust out this year. I like the assertiveness that Kakko is playing with......he's leaning a lot harder on opponents. Using his size and strength helps his confidence. Cuylle that comes more naturally. We got a steal when we drafted him. It's not the usual when you get to the bottom of the 2nd round and there's one guy that stands out above everybody else but Cuylle was that guy that year.

Overall a pretty solid game but I just have one question.

If Kakko and Cuylle are on the ice for the least goals against of anyone on the team, why wouldn't they be the go to forward pair at the end of a game protecting a lead?

I think it’s mostly that they’re great at maintaining possession rather than defending in our own zone, I definitely see the argument to have Mika-Kreider out there considering how great they are on the PK, and Panarin is also maybe the best player in the league at hitting empty nets from his own zone

Makes sense. My only concern with Kakko would be if he gets stuck out there with a few icings cause he gets tired faster than most on the team.

Except that was a forward who f’d up.
Defensemen don’t cover defensemen.
Trouba stepped up because the forward f’d up. He got clowned but also because as he steps up, Quinn uses that.

Quinn also makes good players look foolish so I’m really not down on trouba for this one.
Plenty of real things to shit on him for.

They play fundamental hockey. Combine that with actual skill, and favorable match ups and you have a quality, dependable line. Our "top" lines would be unstoppable if they could just pay attention to basic details.

He has 13 ES points I beleive. I saw a tweet during the game that he passed laf and Panarin for the team lead in ES points

If they put him on PP1 in a future season when Kreider is gone, I feel like he'll be able to get 60+ points while also playing everyone's favorite gritty game and being a great possession forward.
