It seems a little strange to delay. Maybe he had to wait for swelling to go down or something, and now he wants to check out cities this week and not be laid up by the surgery.
And he wants his new team to pay for it.

If Boston had not gone to the Cup finals, he probably would have had it done already. There just wasn't enough time this year.

I go back and forth on Vinny. Trying not to be blinded by fandom. The dude is slow compared to the rest of the squad and he's not a long-term "brick", but he's got intangibles this squad can use. So conflicted.

I'm willing to bet his agent suggested it, thinking that he would get a better deal if the team he signed with got to examine it and have their preferred doctors perform the procedure. Otherwise, you would be taking some other org's doctors word for it by not getting a chance to examine it before it was repaired.

or does it make his playoff performance even more impressive? (just asking to get people's thoughts, no agenda here)

Playoff stats are great, but you have to get there in order to achieve those stats. We would need Horton to be healthy during the regular season for that.

I'd love to add Horton, especially for the right tag. Im just a bit scared at his regular season production and injury history.

I gotta tell ya, ALL free agents scare me a little bit. Starting with "if they're so good, why'd their current team let them go? What do they know that we don't?" Then add in the fact you have to overpay to land the guy you want.

Bad way to look at it. Most guys play their careers to get a chance to be a free agent and a big payday - you don't get to pick who you play for until you've played in the league for a while. Just like in Horton's case - he wanted to see what else is out there and told Boston so. It's not like they "let him go".

Thanks. I needed to hear that.

Horton also reportedly wants to play for a smaller market so he can live his life without a lot of media, so thats a plus for us going forward.

Way to go Jarmo..

if you have in fact flown in Nathan Horton, I am going to take you serious. Getting Gabby was big, letting he and Horton play on the power play.. very nice.

If he wants to keep the lighter travel of the EC, we might be as warm as it gets. He won't go back to Florida. Tampa probably won't have the money if Drouin plays. Carolina needs defense.

The only other team more south in the East is Washington.

And we are a smaller market :)

Agreed. Pobodys nerfect.

Players that hit the open market almost always have a flaw, be it age, health, demands, or abilities.

The no-brainers generally don't hit free agency.

Horton comes with concerns, but so will every option.

It's a gamble no matter what. The question becomes how big and with whom.

Agreed, probably got my panties in a bunch over

I'll get excited if he signs with the CBJ ... until then, it's all talk.

Porty's comments, but this is Nathan Horton, a guy that plays with an edge the way I always wanted Nash to play. If Jarmo can sign him, I say frick "good on ya Jarmo"

A power forward Right wing? What the **** are those & Hello Nathan Horton, you can play your ass off in Columbus and get coffee the next day and no one will bother you. The reporters might ask if you like the Buckeyes.

Not too worried about any reasonable contract for a guy like Horton. The cap will go up soon, our biggest ticket is coming of the payroll after next season, and we should have some cheap offensive talent moving into the lineup over the next few years. I don't think that paying him 5 mil. 3 seasons from now would in any way hamstring the org moving forward.

If he's coming off impending shoulder surgery, I'm afraid its going to be a while before he's crashing and banging like he should . . . .in other words, he'll be ready to go for next seasons playoffs :yo: after a disappointing regular season

I thought that if Jarmo and co. were to take the UFA route, Horton made the most sense. He fills too many holes...1st line winger, power forward, scores goals but won't be looked at to be the 'one' to win each game like Nash was here. As has been stated before, the cap will go back up and 7.5mil could come off the books as soon as next summer if Gaborik isn't brought back. I imagine Horton is looking for something around 6 mil for 5 years. I could do something closer to 6 for 2 years, 5.5 for 3 years, or closer to 5 for 4 years. I'd really like to see this happen.

I'd love to have Horton but his desire to play in a smaller market kind of concerns me. When he says he wants a quieter life, I respect that. I just hope he doesn't mean he wants less accountability. This Jackets team brings it and he would be expected to do the same. He'd be PAID to do the same.

Yes. Concerns about overpaying? Horton's UFA. Anyone will have to overpay. Concerns about his shoulder? Whomever he plays for will have to deal with it. CBJ has no inherent disadvantage, not advantage. The negotiations will test Horton's patience and confidence and Jarmo's interest.

Put me in the I like the idea of Nathan Horton camp.

He's big, plays RW, has scored 20 goals 6 times and is 28 years old.

True he has had concussion issues but any player could have them starting in game 1 next season. Its a risk every player faces. The shoulder should be repaired and he'll be okay.

As for the capenomic geeks, why do we care how much he gets paid? If we want a stud player we have to pay for him. Or are we waiting for the 30 goal, 30 assist guy who has never been injured and is willing to sign with the Jackets for 7 yrs at 21 mill because he likes the fireworks?

As for the cap being tight, well there is always a compliance buyout or two to be used next year if certain things don't get better. :sarcasm:

Well, since the shoulder injury is out there as part of the business conversation about contract terms, I think Jarmo has shown himself to be sufficiently shrewd to factor the injury into the terms of the contract. It is interesting to see that within our division in the East, we may have a certain "cultural" advantage of being the one non-East Coast kind of "small market" town that can be attractive to players looking to get away from the East Coast noise.
