Vinny is gone if we get Horton
I would agree with that, but just trying to make everyone happy.
Vinny is gone if we get Horton
No way on Brunner, he's just an older Filatov. Our new guy Dano is probably better and at the least could fill that role better. Not to mention Letestu. No to Stalberg also... while his speed would be nice I just don't see him making much more of a difference offensively than Comeau. 3 guys I'd go for are Filppula, Clarkson and Briere.
Filppula is my main target. Anismov type player...well rounded and quite skilled offensively but hasn't yet put it all together. Also responsible defensively. I think a Filppula-Anisimov-Gaborik line would be awesome. The key is the contract and how GM's view him around the league. Something around 4.5-5 for 5 years seems fair. However the injury he got in the playoffs did not look good.
His salary was 5.5M last year, his cap hit was 4M. If he is our top target, I wouldn't be shocked to see him get paid up to 6M. Not advocating that, but I would think it has to be on the table.
What's a nice way to put this?
Iginla will NEVER play in Columbus.
There we go!
Except for the part where Brunner actually put up some points in the NHL, including by driving to the net.
If Filppula is going to be 30 during the season and hasn't yet put it together, why on earth would that suddenly change? He's had plenty of opportunities to produce, and despite being given chance after chance after chance, he's managed to have exactly one season that wasn't a disappointment. And for the alleged asking price? No way. No way in hell.
Nathan Horton's agent, Paul Krepelka, confirms Horton was in Columbus today/tonight.
I can't see the fascination for Filppula, either. I'd take Vinny over him at a shorter term and lower cap hit.
Here are a 3 reasons why I would be okay with signing Horton.
1. He appears to be who Jarmo wants the most.
2. We have money to be able to afford it.
3. Who else is better? I don't really like any of the other options.
My only problem with Horton is I think we'd have to overpay to get him, and if we do I dont think we can afford to give him a lot of money AND a long term deal. I'd do 5.75M for 2 years, 5.25 for 3 years, and 4.75 for 4 years max. Ideally a 3 year 4-4.5M would be a fair deal but this is free agency, the players usually win.
Portzline is tweeting that Horton, who sustained a shoulder injury during the playoffs, will have surgery AFTER he signs with his new team. He will not be ready for training camp. That seems like a red flag and potential pitfall to any deal with Horton. For me, it dampers the excitement some.
