No way on Brunner, he's just an older Filatov. Our new guy Dano is probably better and at the least could fill that role better. Not to mention Letestu. No to Stalberg also... while his speed would be nice I just don't see him making much more of a difference offensively than Comeau. 3 guys I'd go for are Filppula, Clarkson and Briere.

Filppula is my main target. Anismov type player...well rounded and quite skilled offensively but hasn't yet put it all together. Also responsible defensively. I think a Filppula-Anisimov-Gaborik line would be awesome. The key is the contract and how GM's view him around the league. Something around 4.5-5 for 5 years seems fair. However the injury he got in the playoffs did not look good.

Clarkson I would also look into but also be very cautious. He's proven he can put the puck in the net pretty consistently while providing that extra toughness that "goalscorers" normally don't provide. The question is how much is the unique package of goals and toughness worth to a team. OUR team? I question the amount of true offense he can bring to a team, especially 1 that doesn't really have the need for that extra toughness. I'd offer say 3.5-4 for 3 years but he's probably gonna get more money and years. Somebody's gonna get Umberger'ed.

Except for the part where Brunner actually put up some points in the NHL, including by driving to the net.

If Filppula is going to be 30 during the season and hasn't yet put it together, why on earth would that suddenly change? He's had plenty of opportunities to produce, and despite being given chance after chance after chance, he's managed to have exactly one season that wasn't a disappointment. And for the alleged asking price? No way. No way in hell.

Im a little concerned with Horton, outside of the playoffs he hasn't done much in the last 2 years, and also concussions..

His salary was 5.5M last year, his cap hit was 4M. If he is our top target, I wouldn't be shocked to see him get paid up to 6M. Not advocating that, but I would think it has to be on the table.

Most likely, and someone might just pay it. I hope it's not CBJ.

He may find his options limited by his medical history and by his apparent desire to live in a "non-traditional" market, meaning he may have to sacrifice some cash for a quality of life choice. Probably not, but maybe.

I take a nap and we go from not being interested in Horton to flying him in. Oh Jarmo. What a tangled web we weave. I'm... unsure on this. I like him but like the rest of you I'm wary of his price and injury history.

For the Clarkson talk i don't think we have to worry at all. I think its a safe bet he is going to Toronto if they want to give the contract. I think Bickell is kind of a fair comparable, similar age both physical. Bickell's totals are a tad inflated in the regular season due to who he plays with and Clarkson is more of a goal scorer. I could see mid 4's but i'm quite sure it won't be from us

Having trouble getting excited about a potential offer to Horton.

He made 5.5 million last year, so one has to think he's going to try and cash in on his playoff record and go for a raise. I gotta think he's looking for somewhere around 24 million over 4 years and that is a lot of moola for someone who's had to come back from two severe concussions.

I guess if I'm over-estimating what he is looking for I'd be more interested but I just don't see it.

I can't see the fascination for Filppula, either. I'd take Vinny over him at a shorter term and lower cap hit.

Here are a 3 reasons why I would be okay with signing Horton.

1. He appears to be who Jarmo wants the most.
2. We have money to be able to afford it.
3. Who else is better? I don't really like any of the other options.

I like it. Shows the league we mean business and everyone can stop with the "no one wants to play there" nonsense (not that most of us really believed that, anyway). I have confidence that Jarmo will extend a reasonable offer.

No one else who might come here is better than Horton. We've got the money for a short deal, but there's huge risk in the term though.

I'd do around $6m per over two years, but dropping down sharply after that if he wants term.

Terms AAV
1 $6.25m
2 $5.75m
3 $5m
4 $4.5m
5 $4.15m

These are 5 different proposals, BTW, not one contract.

Regarding Clarkson, I would rather take a chance on MacArthur at $3million/season then sign Clarkson at $4/$5million/season. Heck I would take Clowe over Clarkson if Clowe has a cheaper price tag.

Regarding Horton, it's not what Jarmo might give him scares me, it's how long he gives him. Rumoured that he wanted a 5 to 6 year deal. With his concussion issues, long term scares me. But I wouldn't complain if Jarmo gaved him a long term deal as I would take any big UFA signing.

Besides Horton, I would want Raymond. Still young and has speed. Proven that he can score in the past. One of the few Canucks who I didn't hate.

My only problem with Horton is I think we'd have to overpay to get him, and if we do I dont think we can afford to give him a lot of money AND a long term deal. I'd do 5.75M for 2 years, 5.25 for 3 years, and 4.75 for 4 years max. Ideally a 3 year 4-4.5M would be a fair deal but this is free agency, the players usually win.

If we were to get him signed, it would certainly send another shot around the league that things are getting serious in Columbus.

We would probably have to overpay to get just about anyone. That is just the way free agency is.

not interested if its a situation where we have to overpay to gain consideration. if not the case, well… I'm not against having our doctors check him out and seeing what he is looking for

either way, very cool he is apparently spending the day. also interesting the local media was completely taken by surprise on this. no leaks in jarmo's org

id also prefer raymond all that begin said

AP is suggesting Clarkson wants $6m per year!!!

Clarkson had 1 good year of goal scoring (30 in 2011-12), then he went to crap in the playoffs. The rest of his career is average to abysmal in the scoring department. He reminds me of a poor man's Umberger. I'm serious.

I wouldn't give this guy $2m per year, let alone $6m. Please bring back Vinny rather than signing a poor man's Umberger.

For the record, my preference order is Horton, Filppula, Vinny, everyone else.

i don't get not bringing vinny back as a kinda 6th man. a affordable guy you can slide into any spot on the roster and get everything you need.

Portzline is tweeting that Horton, who sustained a shoulder injury during the playoffs, will have surgery AFTER he signs with his new team. He will not be ready for training camp. That seems like a red flag and potential pitfall to any deal with Horton. For me, it dampers the excitement some.

It seems a little strange to delay. Maybe he had to wait for swelling to go down or something, and now he wants to check out cities this week and not be laid up by the surgery.
