If there is one player on this team that is horribly overpaid, it is R.J. He tends to get a pass for his underperformance.

Seriously?

Seriously?

He doesn't even get a pass for his crappy performance the last two years from me, and I'm the unofficial HFUmby Fangirl and High Priestess Of The Cult Of R.J..

Folks, any time you want to come after me about how I can't possibly be cognizant of what's going on with RJ Umberger, I would like to refer y'all to the likes of this sorts of mishegaas. This is what I'm up against - folks who ignore his first three years here, who can't see beyond "he's OSU so he sucks" and folks who are convinced that they are the only ones who notice that he's not doing well and that the world just HAS TO BE TOLD.

This is why I persist. Because of this madness.

Wonder if I'd be the only ecstatic one if Zherdev made his way back to Columbus...

Ecstatic? G-d no. He's caused me as much frustration as wonder. But I'd certainly be intrigued - especially if he actually manages to fit himself into the Jackets culture as it presently exists.

I don't think anyone here has given Umby a pass, but we don't really count for anything. The CBJ has clearly given him a pass. Otherwise, he would have been scratched multiple times the past few seasons. I don't recall any scratches for him. In fact, I seem to remember Richards saying something like, hopefully he will play his way outta this slump he is in...

There was something on the ticket wire during the draft party that listed at least 10 teams that Vinny L. had already visited. I just don't see where we would fit in.

He gets an underserving bad rap. He came around a lot his last year in Columbus and as soon as he did he was gone. Theres a guy on this team that gives everyone tons of frustration and you know him quite well but he's here. Zherdev was 22 his last season in Columbus and he had a better season at 22 then Nash did he was supposed to do more on a terrible terrible team i guess . Yeah the dude had some issues but a teenager signing million dollar contracts can take it that way, he was maturing. Much like Voracek i wish the team would have been a bit more patient and let the kids mature. Both worked out for us in it's own way but still... Way things go, i just really do wish he was still in the NHL, guy is good enough for sure

Among the folks on here, he doesn't get a free pass.

Among the general fan base as a whole, I think he's regarded on the same level as what Tressel is for OSU football fans.

I sort of like the heatley idea. Esp. as mentioned, because it will be a contract year for him, and heck, someone has to challenge letestu for the scoring title this year.

I only hope RJ gets bought out, traded, waived, retires, decides to travel the world, stops coming to games, loses his skates, finds something better to do, etc etc. I understand playing half-hearted guys with skill over hard workers, but seeing RJ on the ice is like finding a lump of coal in my stocking. and richards will keep putting him out there, i imagine

Should Jarmo go after Filppula? and is there need if the price is right?

He had a bad season as didn't recover 100% from lockout injury and the tight schedule didn't help him either.

If we are talking about guys like Heatley and Lecavalier, any interest in sending a 1-year offer Iginla's way?

While he's lost a step or two, I still think he's got another decent year in him and he fills our need for a top line winger.

Teams like Pitts, Vancouver, LA, Boston will be hard-pressed fitting him under the cap. Calgary is rebuilding. I could see Chicago, Anaheim and Dallas in the mix for his services.

I'm not sure how much moeny we have to spend if we are trying to get a top 6 forward and resign vinny for 3rd line:

12 forwards for $28M (Gabby, Dubi, Cam, RJ, Anisimov, Johanson, Foligno, Leteshu, Jenner, Boll, D-mac, Calvert) - I am assuming Jenner is on roster and his sub $900k salary helps. Still means we need 4 forwards and at least one top 6 (probably actually closer to two).
6 d-men for $20.67M (JJ, Mikitin, Wiz, Tyutin, Murray, Prout) - again assumption on Murray. Still need a 7th d-man but could be filled internally?
1 Goalie for $5.6M for Bob. Still need a backup.
Does Commie's $1.1M buyout count vs cap? I'm going to assume it does, but maybe not.

So we have 19 guys signed at $55.4M (including Commie's buyout, $54.3M without it).

Cap is $64M.

So let's assume we spend $1M on a backup goalie (find a vet who will be willing to be a backup), a 7th d-man for $750k. A 13th forward for $750k. So that takes us to 57.9M - with an entire roster except 3 forwards.

$6.1M to sign a top 6 forward, potentially 2 (can you count on RJ, Johanson or Foligno in top 6), and likely a 3rd line forward. if we assume we resign Vinny at $2M (may take $2.5M) as the 2nd guy (potential top 6) - we have $4.1M for a top 6 forward and 3rd line forward. Not a lot of dollars unless we can move a salary IMO.

I started doing this on Capgeek and this is close to what I was doing. (Does anyone know how to add a player not under contract and assign a dollar/cap number to that player?)

Anyway, I figure this means a top 6 forward and one other signing - whether it be Prospal (I hope), a veteran d-man for 6-7 duty (a la Aucoin) or a b/u goalie (least likely IMO given McElhinney is signed to a one-way).

Unless, of course, the scoring forward is acquired via a trade that moves one of the guys in Roadie's lineup.

On the left you can pick the players you want to add (change to UFA or change the team). Then you can change their salary. You can also "trade" a player or buy them out on the right had side. You can also move the players around for your line combos. You can also "acquire" players; change it from FA to acquire on left hand side tab.

Thanks. Will be fun to play around with that when I get a chance.

Ultimately, though, the point above still stands. Likely only two players to be added at this point, with one being a scoring forward. Could probably do three if cost is controlled and they want to bump up against the cap.

I project 1 trade for a top 6 forward, and maybe a depth pickup. And a return of VP
