Paying someone to murder for you doesn't make you any less guilty.

He didn't say anything sympathetic about dogs dying in a fire in that post you claimed was full of cognitive dissonance (or this thread for that matter), so no. You're still using it wrong.

Maybe you should use your eyeballs before you spout rubbish you think makes you look smart.

Moreover even if he had mentioned it, cognitive dissonance is a term used in reference to the effect inconsistent beliefs or attitudes have on behavior and decision making. NOTHING Modo said was said fell under this definition so you're a moron. Congrats. Enjoy your quinoa and shut the **** up.

I'm a vegan. **** you.

Indeed. Cognitive dissonance is the discomfort one might experience when holding two contradictory beliefs.

The majority of us are simply taught by society to believe that dogs and cats, etc. are pets, companions and just worth more, while believing that chickens, cows and pigs, etc. are food and just inferior or unrelatable enough on some level to not care about. So many people justify this thinking, the treatment of some animals, and other potential issues in different ways and don't find it contradictory because these beliefs are often so ingrained in our brains still. In cases like this a better word would be doublethink. So while some vegans might talk a lot about double standards or cognitive dissonance of people, it's not always the case even though sometimes a person might not recognize them while for example being overly defensive about this topic.

I'm sure many people viewed themselves as animals lovers and justified these actions to themselves for a long time before actually making the decision on becoming a vegan/vegetarian/person who cut down on animal products so I understand when/if non-vegans say similar things, and some feel these are good reasons to try evaluating the morality of conduct.

Are animals of equal worth to human beings?

Yes. No life is worth more than another.

Okay. So here's the thing - you try to pin meat-eaters as hypocritical, but you are as well. Let's examine what logically follows from your answer that animals and humans are equal.

1. If it's true, then you should be equally outraged when a shark eats a seal as when I eat a hamburger. Same thing after all. And if your answer is that only humans have the ability to really make that choice, then how can you defend the assertion that we are nothing more than animals? You're caught in a contradiction.

2. If it's true, then it's hypocritical of you to say that human beings should exist outside of the food chain. Every animal lives in the food chain in one way or another. If we are nothing more than animals, why are we supposed to live so differently?

3. If it's true, then you are a murderer thousands of times over. How many bugs do you kill when you drive your car? How many ants do you step on while walking? If all life is the same, you are faced with the uncomfortable reality that you have taken a lot of lives. Either you're a hypocrite for calling out everyone other than yourself for killing, or you are drawing the line somewhere as to which animals can be killed and which can't (just as meat-eaters do).

4. If it's true that we humans only have the same value as animals, then it's impossible for you to say that we are moral beings. Humans' ability to make moral choices separates us from animals. But in saying that there is no separation from animals, you're saying that we can't make moral choices and, thus, aren't doing anything immoral by eating meat.
