Stutzle goal called off due to “interference”

The Sens didn't really have it last night, but that kind of call is such a swing. A tie game with rising momentum vs the deflation of an obviously blown call.

Who knows if the result changes, but damn . .. that one sucks.

Relevant snipped of Rule 56 - Interference:

56.2 Minor Penalty - A minor penalty for interference shall be imposed:

(v) On a player who deliberately knocks the stick out of an opponent’s hand, or prevents a player who has dropped his stick or any other piece of equipment from regaining possession of it (see Rule 53.2(iii));

I don't like the call. You'd be hard pressed to call what Stutzle did "deliberately [knocking] the stick out of an opponent’s hand."

I'm generally against the idea that hitting the stick out of an opponent’s hand should be an automatic penalty. Unless it's a) deliberate (as per Rule 56) or b) forceful (as per Rule 61) I don't think the outcome of the player losing grip of his stick should be the determinant factor. It feels much too arbitrary.

you realize you're allowed to stick check someones stick right?

like that's 90 percent the game of hockey, happens all the time in the corners, in faceoffs, in front of the net. they were both battling for the puck and for positioning for their sticks, your allowed to make contact with another stick in a battle.

the canes player was just reaching though so obviously had a weak grip on his stick. but why is that stutzles problem?

if that's interreferences, a call would be made every 10 seconds in hockey and games would last 7 hours.
You are literally not in that manner. Stutz faked his wind up or whatever you want to call it early to hit the stick. It was a brilliant play. He simply got caught. Any two on one, a player at an NHL level would tap it in. They dont need that pre-meditated wind up one timer style.

And dude, use the shift key. So hard to read that.

According to the NHL rulebook, interference occurs when a player uses their stick or body to impede the progress of an opponent who is not in possession of the puck:
  • Knocking a stick out of an opponent's hand
Deliberately knocking a stick out of an opponent's hand when they're not in possession of the puck.

Refs are sooo bad. Players should band together and demand some changes, they can’t fine everyone. If they try you oust Bettman and replace him with Gritty. Simple.

It looks like there's a reach over his stick first by the chasing player. It's a pretty bad call and most likely wouldn't get called if the puck didn't end up in the net. It was a panic call.

I was legitimately stunned this was called interference, as I thought interference was basically only body checking someone without the puck... but TIL the following is in the NHL rulebook under the Interference rule.

That said it's still a shit call. Stutzle is merely trying to avoid and counter the sticklift and tieup by the defender by repositioning his stick.

If the ref was smart, he would have made no call and signaled for a review/talk to the other officials so they could talk about it and what everyone saw. Once he called a penalty, that made the play dead and the goal/whole play unreviewable, i believe.

I think everytime I see this call, it's been called slashing by the refs instead of interference.

Really obvious penalty lol

Feels like everyone is focusing on the first part- Stutzle knocking the stick out of Svechnikov's hands- and missing the second part where Stutzle bats it out of Svechnikov's reach. Hence why it's interference and not slashing

I'm not surprised, I think the Refs lose their mind when they are in Canada or something. The calls I've seen made just make you scratch your head sometimes. Basic puck battle being called roughing, guys stumbling being called tripping or interference, hooking when the stick didn't even touch a player. It's been rough.

Ehh...
I think this was called because Stuzle, possibly inadvertently, did a little move to send Svechnikov's stick away, not because Svechnikov lost his stick after what was the softest stick tap to happen in any game yesterday. In that light, the call is at least defensible.

Can anyone make sense of this? Can players just stop 2-on-1’s by dropping their sticks now?

Players have been getting powerplays for dropping their sticks for a while now and I've always hated it.

If it doesn't break, tough f***in titties.

"Inadvertently" being the key word that makes it not interference.

In other sports the refs have to face reporters, make them face reporters after the game. Fans deserve answers.
What's sports are these? I've never seen an Umpire or NFL Official stand in front of reporters and answer questions.

"Deliberately" also applies to "prevents a player who has dropped his stick or any other piece of equipment from regaining possession of it" ?

He knocked the stick out of the defenders hands to keep him from being able to break up a pass. Maybe a little soft, but that’s a text book interference call.

I'd think it would have to. Otherwise it would be interference to accidentally skate into someone's dropped stick.

Sure Stutzle making contact with Svechnikov’s stick knocks it out of his hand but how much of that is a result of Svechnikov being behind the play and having to reach in with one hand and attempting to lift is stick to impede Stutzle’s shooting motion? There’s context that has to be applied to every play and the ref failed to understand what was happening on the play and made a bad call. It resulting in a goal being waved off in a one goal game makes it worse.

Is Stutzle not allowed to get his stick in an advantageous position because Svhecnikov has his stick in the air while reaching with one hand? Is he supposed to just accept that his stick is going to be tied up?

I’ve seen Corey Perry do this a hundred times so I’m glad it finally got called for once

In fairness to the officials? The only reason the Sens were in a position to make a "mindless shorthanded line change" was because the officials decided to penalize Pinto for slashing the ice.

Ok but that doesn't mean the Sens need to make brainless self-inflicted mistakes to exacerbate the situation.

That line change was a completely valid penalty and took the game from 1-1 to 3-1. That’s not on the officials.
