Do you have statistics to back up this lack of dominance and strength? I always thought both had very strong possession numbers.

What is it Montreal has been doing?
Last three seasons, Matthews is -1 (not bad) and Tavares is -8 ( worst on the team), while the team is 8-11, and hasn't won a round.

Montreal plays a hard forecheck, usually with two forwards, and a solid defensive system in their own end. Similar to the Islanders, and not a trap.

The Isles likely could have used 1-2 more offensive line drivers, especially during the second half of the series. Barzal can only do so much in that regard.

Montreal plays a 1-2-2. And yes, it's a 'trap'.

As for Tavares and Matthews, you were discussing possession and dominance and then come back with plus minus. What does plus minus have to do with possession or even individual ability?

What exactly does jt provide anymore. He’s on the decline or will be as soon as you take away Marner or Nylander from him. Leafs should be looking to dump the contract asap
He provides pretty much exactly what he provided in Long Island, both regular season and playoffs, in less ice time. He still hits more than most of our forwards (5th among fwds this season), is basically PPG, is our best center on the faceoff dot, I'm not really seeing this decline.

They play a 2-1-2 or a 1-2-2 forecheck, neither of which is a 1-3-1 'trap'.

The discussion i was having was about neither dominance nor possession, but 'strength up the middle', and I dropped it when it got too far off topic.

They play a 1-2-2, it doesn't have to be a 1-3-1 to be a trap.

Watching the last two games, Tampa has used a 1-3-1, and even a 1-4, more often than Montreal has used a 1-2-2.

Certainly, every team falls into a 1-2-2, or even a 1-3-1 sometimes. The difference is whether or not that is the default strategy.

Dude, Montreal doesn't 'fall into' a 1-2-2. It's what they play.

Seriously, is that all? "They play a trap." No explanation, no logic, no response to any point I make beyond "they play a trap"?

Fine. If you have to believe "they play a trap", with the implication that this is somehow cheating or boring, to let you justify them having beaten us and made it to the finals, then I will happily let you say "they play a trap".

Yeah it’s pretty clearly a 1-2-2. If a 2nd comes in for support the 1st guy peels back to keep the 2-2 portion in check.

When 34 & 16 were on the ice they were STRICT on not getting caught up ice. They played for a zero sum game and Keefe let them because he’s a terrible coach
