btw: re comment above. As someone who grew up listening to a lot of PxP on the radio, it's just a different call that is required. Combining with TV just isn't the right approach.

I agree that a separate radio PBP guy is ideal, but we won't ever have that here again. And that said, even though Forslund wasn't as good for radio as Kaiton, he held his own, and you could still pretty well visualize the play, which you can't really do a lot of the time with Mike. (I do think he's still learning on the job, though, and I think it'll come in time.)

Honestly, Kaiton was so good at giving you information quickly that you had to learn to follow him. Forslund was good enough, and easier on the ears.

I realize I'm biased but I really hold forslund as the gold standard in play by play. He had his go-to phrases but he could tell you what was happening quickly and interestingly, and be able to drop a joke in every now and then too. I don't think Mike is awful but he's nowhere close to how great John was and I miss John immensely.

This. Get ESPN+ Listen to some of the other teams group, you will see Mike isn't that bad. We are just spoiled.

this is such a good description. When I first listened to Kaiton, I was like "WTF is this, the guy talks a million miles an hour and has such a high pitched voice". I realized it was because he was telling you EVERYTHING that's going on, Forslund was so much easier to listen to.

Lol, yes. That first time listening to Chuck I was like "where's the punctuation or spaces please"

That's a bingo. Mike's OK for a PbP guy, goal calls aside, and he has good chemistry with Tripp. We had one of the all-time greats radio side and a guy that developed into the gold standard on the TV side. Going from that to a guy that's OK but inexperienced is always going to seem like a massive downgrade.

And I'll add this as a big JF supporter. When you listened to his pbp on NBC and now w Seattle he was/is not the same as with Tripp. He threw out softballs that whoever analyst he was with rarely hit. But with TT, the chemistry, inside jokes, ongoing 'memes', along with various shenanigans made for entertaining broadcasts. It's what kept me watching most all the games over the 10 years of meh hockey.

I liken it somewhat to Lewis and Martin. When they broke up Dean was never near as funny but he was still Dean MF Martin.

John with JT is well... not the same.

Ok, but they've been together for, what, 15 games? And remember, a lot of people never cared for the JF/TT banter -- some people were still ragging Tripp for bringing JF down right until they day JF left.

Also, Tripp would be pretty brilliant in a remake of The Day the Clown Cried.

Yes. But have you listened to JT? It's like pulling teeth to get him to say anything.

I don’t listen to our broadcasts this season if I can help it but that’s me taking a break from them as a pair. John used to keep Tripp in line and without him Tripp runs rampant with over the top homerism and missing the boat on analysis John would often also catch. Mike is fine but he’s not great either, just vanilla and you can feel the inexperience. I can agree that other play by play guys aren’t across the board better. Most are but more than a couple are only by a small margin.

I miss John but even when he was here I would take breaks like this because it’s often fun listening to what the other team says about us. They usually hear some behind the scenes talk we don’t get on ours. It’s a fun change of pace. I haven’t watched our broadcast in at least five or six games.

There's a thread on the main board about the most biased broadcast crews. Honestly I dont get it they are team employees who cover said team for the fans of that team. They are supposed to be homers!

Look we all like Mike. We do. Big rig is our big rig. But man, he is cluless about what happens on the ice sometimes. We need a better PBP guy, or Mike needs to step up his awareness.

I'd almost pay like some kind of subscriber fee to have Kaiton be the PBP guy on Bally.

Damn I miss him on my late night drives between NC and VA.

SHOOOOOOTing. Sam SON ov.

Sigh.

Lol I know and agree! It’s the style in which they do it that makes it tolerable or not to me. Tripp goes way too far for my tastes. He’ll point out plays that are actually standard plays that are the minimum expectation to play in the NHL and get on a soapbox about how it’s an exceptional play that reflects the personal character and upbringing behind the player, reflective of the hard work done in the off season under the guidance and enhanced by every member of the coaching staff in a way that happens with no other team and that it was identified early by the front office staff who selected this player in a cerebral fashion that indicates the next step in the evolution of player selection.

All for a saucer pass.

I really struggled after last year when I saw the effect of the other side of this coin. When a player who’s contract negotiations aren’t going anywhere curiously starts getting held accountable on a higher level for plays that don’t have anything to do with him, when the same player previously was celebrated in the other direction despite imperfections. Or even before that players who in general are on the outs or just not working out getting blamed for plays that also don’t have anything to do with them. Either case leading to opinions on this board and beyond reflecting those biases regardless of how poor the examples being held up are.

Tripp unleashed in the absence of John can be fun, especially for those who revel in that sort of approach. Which every fan base has plenty of including us. Just not my bag.

Most irritating to me is the "unselfish line change".
