Well, Tripp was also insisting Jarvis got a chance on the play that resulted in a penalty shot when he very clearly didn't. Tripp gonna Tripp.
Maniscalco is worse than ever. He mis-identifies a Canes player about 6-7 times per game. Not just 4th line guys either. Called Jarvis Aho on the breakaway. Last game called KK Svech. Brutal.

I hoped he would be getting better by this point. I was among those preaching to give him a chance to get better given his lack of experience. I think I agree that he's largely gotten worse. He hasn't quite figured out goal calls, drives me a little batty with "down from his defensive position" and "offsides" and such, and yeah, he seems to be getting more wrong. Doesn't really take away my enjoyment of the game, but I hope he can smooth some of it out at some point.

Having watched the replay this morning I have two thoughts.

1) Shoot the freaking puck and look for rebounds rather than try and force cross crease passes through defenders.

2) Seeing the time left on the replay and time left on the game is quite something. Knew with about 5 mins left there was no OT coming. So either a win (YAY!) or a horrible horrible collapse (BOO!) Kind of nerve wracking.

He's not easy to follow on the radio side, I'll say that.

For perspective, I read the Rongos board for fun and Kakko, and their "I hoped he would be getting better by this point" doesn't start with the telly crew.

Feel blessed by what you see, if not what you hear, admitted.

Interesting....I watch a lot of out of town hockey games and IMO Canes coverage is decent if not good.

Maniscalco is following a legend in JF and that's clearly impossible to match that but he stays with the flow of the game and his voice is also not bulletin board scratch material.

I often think during games how do the poor radio listeners know what's going on. That's my biggest criticism of him now, he should be sticking more to actual play by play, actually calling what is happening on the ice. He goes into these extended observations/discussions with himself and meanwhile there's a game going on and the puck has changed possession like 3 times with no mention. It's distracting for me even being able to see whats happening on TV. JF is the master at quickly inserting some interesting factiod/comment while never losing the call of what is actually happening on the ice. MM needs to edit himself and focus more on calling what is happening on the ice and save his gabbing for breaks between play

I don't think this was mentioned much on our board but on Anaheim's they were really impressed by the Canes ability to shut the Ducks down after we got the go-ahead goal.

I agree....it was perhaps the most impressive display I've seen from the Canes in recent memory and was Tampa Bay like in protecting a lead.

That folks was Stanley Cup winning play/shutdown in the last 10 minutes.

btw: re comment above. As someone who grew up listening to a lot of PxP on the radio, it's just a different call that is required. Combining with TV just isn't the right approach.

Canes really need a dedicated team (but I know the owner is more frugal with re: to non-ice spend).

I get the complaints about people having to listen to him on the radio, very few broadcasters are good at simulcasting for radio and TV. As for his TV PBP, I don't really pay much attention except to look out for Tripp's zingers so I don't even really know how he compares to most other hockey PBP guys who I also don't really listen to.

It was definitely a playoff-style game, minus a little bit of physicality. Neither team was trying to sell tickets out there, it was the kind of hockey you see when they’re trying to scrap for any advantage and taking the game 10 seconds at a time.

This kind of game (win or lose) is great experience for the younger guys. Guys like Svech, Jarvis, and for that matter TDA and Bear need to be able to exist in a game like that, because it’s part of the gauntlet in the late spring. And now that we’re a team with a target on its back, more and more teams are going to try and play us that way.

There are definitely worse out there. I just thought he'd have improved more at this point. I think his voice is fine for the most part, but he does have some things that I think still need polish. Higher than average voice cracks. As I said, his goal calls just don't sound great. I think he almost yells too much when he really just needs to raise his voice a bit with excitement. The mic is right there so it's a bit much to full on yell about everything mildly exciting. And I just don't like the way elongates things sometimes like ANNNNNNDDDDDDERRRRRSEN. As mentioned, he seems a bit more mistake prone right now, but I imagine he'll clean that up again.

At the end of the day, it doesn't ruin my enjoyment and we could do worse. He also loves the Canes and has always been a big advocate for them. I just hope he gains more polish.

Yes. Watched a Red Wings stream a couple weeks ago and felt like calling Detroit EMS to check to see if their broadcast crew had pulses. Like a tennis match - hushed monotone and silence. MM needs some work but there's much worse out there.

Physicality picked up a bit for a stretch in the 3rd there. There was a sequence with like a dozen solid hits back and forth at one point.

Yes he needs to practice some measured differentiation in his delivery. The over emoting just grates. I mostly keep the sound down low now.

I honestly just don't give a shit about Mike being the PBP guy, and I genuinely think some of you all need to just get over it.

Yeah he's not good but it is what it is. Seems like he could get a lot better by really immersing himself into the rosters and just practicing. That many player name mistakes and stuttered calls/not keeping up with the play just makes it seem like either he doesn't have it, or he doesn't care to get better at it.
