Close! It's actually Hoagie. Please tell me his nickname is Torpedo
You make it sound like it's a good deal for the Blues, but it's most likely that he simply wants to leave since this deal takes him right to the UFA. It's not an annual renewal schedule, it's the all-out bidding war next year where you will have to overpay one way or another to keep him. The guy who is huge, knows his role but can still get you close to 15 goals is a coveted asset to most teams.I mean, that's pretty sweet. He's a good Bottom-6 guy who is huge and can move. And you want those guys on a series of endless 1-year deals to keep 'em motivated and playing hungry.
So this is nice. It's not unreasonably expensive by any means, for the cost of keeping him on an annual renewal schedule as that sort of player.

You are stuck in another century. In today's NHL Trenin signed 3,5x5 as a UFA, Rasmussen signed for 3,2x4 as an RFA since it bought into a few of his UFA years. Sure these guys have a slightly higher skill ceiling than Toropchenko but are in the same ballpark.I mean, sure. But an annual renewal schedule (even if it requires a little overpayment) is more desirable on this sort of player than locking them in to long-term deals. Where you limit your own flexibility in the bottom-6 and also put a big dent in their potential motivation.
The only problem with your analysis here is that Toropchenko is still an RFA after this 1 year extension expires…You are stuck in another century. This is nothing more than a "get out of jail free" card to Toropchenko without the stress of arbitration while the Blues go along with it because they intend to trade him as they need to somehow move their rebuild forward and low cap hit and maximum flexibility might bring the best return from a contender. Otherwise, you absolutely do commit for 4-5 years to this kind of player because it locks them up through their prime, the contract isn't tough to move or eat even if they do begin to struggle and, most importantly, that's simply what the market dictates.

Yeesh, capwages shows that he’ll be an RFA, but you’re right (and I’m wrong). Apologies!
