I mean, that's pretty sweet. He's a good Bottom-6 guy who is huge and can move. And you want those guys on a series of endless 1-year deals to keep 'em motivated and playing hungry.


So this is nice. It's not unreasonably expensive by any means, for the cost of keeping him on an annual renewal schedule as that sort of player.

You make it sound like it's a good deal for the Blues, but it's most likely that he simply wants to leave since this deal takes him right to the UFA. It's not an annual renewal schedule, it's the all-out bidding war next year where you will have to overpay one way or another to keep him. The guy who is huge, knows his role but can still get you close to 15 goals is a coveted asset to most teams.

I mean, sure. But an annual renewal schedule (even if it requires a little overpayment) is more desirable on this sort of player than locking them in to long-term deals. Where you limit your own flexibility in the bottom-6 and also put a big dent in their potential motivation.
