You are stuck in another century. In today's NHL Trenin signed 3,5x5 as a UFA, Rasmussen signed for 3,2x4 as an RFA since it bought into a few of his UFA years. Sure these guys have a slightly higher skill ceiling than Toropchenko but are in the same ballpark.

This is nothing more than a "get out of jail free" card to Toropchenko without the stress of arbitration while the Blues go along with it because they intend to trade him as they need to somehow move their rebuild forward and low cap hit and maximum flexibility might bring the best return from a contender. Otherwise, you absolutely do commit for 4-5 years to this kind of player because it locks them up through their prime, the contract isn't tough to move or eat even if they do begin to struggle and, most importantly, that's simply what the market dictates.

I think it has to do more with the management situation the Blues are in. This takes him to the end of Army’s tenure as GM and gives Steen more roster flexibility.


His season last year was good in the midst of an overall pretty mid season for the team. He plays hard and direct, but he doesn’t have the skill set to play up the lineup.

Would the Blues love to keep him around? I’m sure. But if he wants to go through a process of seeking out a large payday, I wouldn’t want the Blues to be the team to do it.
