Steven McDonald Extra Effort Award

I actually thought Nash had a good shot at winning MVP earlier in the season.

I guess Hank read that and took exception to it. Not a chance now.

Hank has been great and easily could win this, but to see how Stepan has made such a leap this year is very exciting. The fact that he is apparently almost always the first on/last off during practices also counts.

We may finally have a center (which we keep) in the Weight, Savard mold...would be thrilled to finally develop and have one stick around...

Anyway, that fact that he does everything and considering he is a leader (Captain of the gold medal world junior team and at Wisconsin- who lost to my BC Eagles in the Frozen Four:), I think he wins this hands down.

"For the player that goes above and beyond the call of duty."

Henrik Lundqvist does more for this team than anyone else in the league to their team.

Above and beyond, we're a last place team without him.

This joke got old a very long time ago.

Hank may be the best active goaltender in the world, but if we're THAT bad, and he's THAT good, he's be a 5 time Hart trophy winner.

Considering we're 4th last in GF, yes we are likely a last place team if we had an average NHL goalie like Biron.

That's ridiculous. Yeah, we'd be picking top 5 if we had Bryz, Nabby, Ward or Miller. Pick any top 10 'tender, and we're in roughly the same spot we are now.

Yeah...I don't think so. I guess we'll agree to disagree. I don't think that you can replace Hank with even Rinne or Quick and have us not be picking Barkov or Drouin.

And I think that Miller and Ward are top 10 goaltenders.

Miller has more of an arguement than Ward, but this isn't the thread I suppose. Agree to disagree

Yeah, really thought Stepan would get it. Cally is always worthy of consideration, but he has hardly been his usual self this season.

When no one was doing anything creative with the puck Nash and Stepan held it together. After Hank, those two guys have been our best players.

And they've had to do it playing mostly with Dan Girardi who has been underwhelming this year, to say the least.

They should really just rename this one the Callahan award.

This^. The obvious and continued dedication by Capt Cally to put out almost every single shift overcomes the improvement in technique by Stepan, which was completely lost the first half of this season, then become pronounced, and now is on and off shift to shift, game to game.

Callahan winning it was a sham.

He had no business in the discussion.

Even Tortorella wasn't convinced that he should have won it. I'm paraphrasing, but he said "I think Stepan was close."

He can't come outright and say "My team captain didn't deserve to win it this year."

I think if any forward deserved it, it was Stepan. Callahan just proved that this award is a Callahan award / popularity contest. Callahan was deserving of it in years past. Not this year. He hasn't been the captain / heart beat that drives the team this year. He's had games where he looks lost and completely unmotivated.

Was it last season that the team came out absolutely flat after the presentation of the award? I remember it was recent, but can't remember specifically which season. That really irked me.

Always love the little anecdote that Officer McDonald throws into the mix in his speech, if that doesn't get you fired up, nothing will.

Will forever be amazed, in awe, grateful, and just astonished that Connor became an NYPD officer :yo:
