Steve Yzerman is not a good GM.

He doesn't have to be a good GM to maximize his return on Larkin. All he needs to do is deal with Danny Briere and that rocket scientist, Keith Jones. Of course, he would have to convince Larkin to go to Philly ,so maybe he does need a little skill...

For the Red Wings to still at least try (and likely fail) to make the playoffs, Yzerman needs to:

A. Bring in a suitable replacement or improvement over Larkin
B. Bring in the suitable #2C that they've needed forever

Otherwise, they might as well go for another rebuild. Build around Seider and Raymond, sell off DeBrincat, Copp, Gibson and Faulk for picks and prospects, fill gaps with UFA's they can flip, and weaponize cap space to get additional assets. But those assets should be used to make some trades for good players or prospects that can help in the next couple of years. No more of this "bUt He'S oNlY bUiLdInG tHrOuGh ThE dRaFt So It HaS tO tAkE oVeR 5 yEaRs" crap.

That said, if they go the "rebuild the rebuild" route, it needs to be done by a different GM. Preferably someone that has absolutely zero ties to the Red Wings organization and current front office.

They need an actual coach that knows how to adjust

Todd is horrible at adjusting

This the Wing's C Depth (Becher and Bear as well).

That is uninspiring given a lot of them play wing as well. Kasper being the most promising.

The other big problem is that Larkin as a full NMC so that will lower his return value in trade. But they HAVE to get back a good C, a very good C.

Of course, asking for a trade and being traded are two different things. Maybe he stays and Yzerman does the necessary things to make him want to stay?
Kasper, Copp, Danielson and Finnie are the only true internal center options. Need 1 or 2 added for sure.

Not sure how much Larkin’s NMC really limits his value as there’s no ticking clock on a trade getting done.

What do you think the offseason plan should be now?
Same as it was before, just with more options on how to go about it.

Who’s giving us another, better, #1C than Larkin ?

Because without him, or someone close to him, we have the worst C depth in the league by a mile
A better 1C is obviously not coming back (best case is someone younger with potential to better or someone close to Larkin + another piece or two). It’s just premature and dramatic to say the only direction is a new rebuild.

I wonder why he was so good in Tampa.

He never made a single bad signing.

Drafted well. Or at least his scouting team did.

Didn't make any egregiously bad trades.

Made some pretty bold moves that paid off - trading Ben Bishop in 2017 when the Lighting were still sorta in contention for the playoffs to go with a young and unknown Vas. Trading Drouin for Sergachev.

Promote youth within.
Try get a top six center.
IF Larkin is traded its for a package of multiple players with clear potential or ready top six forward talent, alternatively top four d-man with picks/prospects.
Try get physical LHD. Whether that is all-round or defensive.

Steve Yzerman on a 18-year old Keith Primeau

"He'll never play in the NHL"
I'm assuming this is true, but what a comment to make about a rookie at your camp.

There's always a chance Yzerman plays it cool, doesnt rush it and waits until he gets a prime offer, or just hopes enough time passes and maybe Larkin reconsiders.

Or he takes too long, Larkin gets traded for a mediocre return and any players you could have traded for to help are already dealt.

Took a decade
Lol, I've been vocal for three years but believe me it's killed my hockey soul. I've been watching since `91. So Steve Yzerman is legendary and while I know he's completely failing right now and think he should be fired I've never 'not' been rooting for him to turn it around somehow or just 'get lucky' even. lol.

Why would he gut the future for players that aren't signed to long term contracts?

At some point you have to make trades to try and win games, not just stockpile as many futures as possible hoping they work out, adding Hughes would have given you the best d pairing in the league.

Detroit faded in the last 2 months of the season for the 3rd or 4th season in a row, adding more to get Hughes over Faulk puts them in a playoff spot and keeps Larkin from asking for a trade, and probably Debrincat next year too. Now the team is going to have to rebuild again and it'll go from 10 years without seeing the playoffs to 15.

Yzerman should have went all out to get Hughes. Not too sure what he did offer?

No idea, but apparently the deal was done on the condition that Hughes agreed to sign long term but Hughes didn't want to commit to that, plus he couldn't even re-sign until July 1st. Regardless, Hughes would have played 50~ games with the wings and Detroit went 23-19-7 in the games after Hughes was traded to the Wild while only missing the playoffs by only 7 points.

Have to think adding Hughes for so much of the season gets Detroit into the playoffs, and Larkin is likely staying. Even if it’s only this season and next, that’s got to be better than the captain wanting out?

And if Hughes walk next summer you are down many pieces and the same position open again and you aren't any further ahead then you were and two seasons after.

Larkin almost assuredly doesn’t demand a trade if they make a push for Hughes and make the playoffs because of it, so no, they wouldn’t be “in the same situation” if they went that route.
