Never had the makings of a #1 center...

I know, when they make it in 10 years time they’ll get back at me, ” I told you so”

With Buffalo and Montreal looking to be there to stay and Florida coming back it’s not looking pretty for Detroit
And just remember, there is utterly no point in making the playoffs unless you are going to hoist the Cup. Otherwise, making the playoffs without hoisting the Cup is demoralizing, you learn nothing, and you'll forever droop your head in utter shame. So, you want to go every season without making the playoffs until there is that exact time when it is a 100% certainty that you'll hoist the Cup. Trust me, I've been told this over and over.

The ironic thing about this is that Detroit's front office has many of the players whom they won championships with. It's like an old boys club of Detroit legends all in one setting.

Were fans chiming another "Tampa Bay" in the making when Yzerman went back?

If Detroit doesn't make the playoffs again? Why wouldn't you? Why would anyone want to stay on a team that can't make the playoffs and make you waste your youth on failure after failure? For a future that refuses to come?
why would anyone want to stay ......oh I dunno.....because more than half the jobs available are on teams that dont stand a chance?

This has been my fav Yzerplan mantra! By FAR.

Success is not determined by making playoffs.lol

FWIW - I'd actually spun around and started believing Wing's are on a good path this season.

I love some of the guys and all that cap space. Love the goalie situation and think it's one of the most desirable in NHL. Gibson for one more year (maybe with Postava). Trade Cossa for good assets. In comes Augustine who I think is going to be a legit goalie in the Walstedt/Askarov/can I now include Dobes in this tier?

Love Ed/Asp/Seider as a D core to build around. Liked the Faulk trade. I think Chariot is a fine 2LD.

My only qualm was that Kaspar didn't become that 50 point 2C I was told he would become because of a 2 month sample size at the end of last season.

To me, it looked like a massive gap between Larkin and 2C. I was saying they need to take those picks, that cap space and some of those exciting prospects (MBN, Bear, Cossa etc) and get another C that is either

as good as Larkin
better than Larkin

Eg. Kadri would've been the 'type' of guy they needed as a 2C behind Larkin. Or Zacha. All their assets should be able to unearth a guy like that.

Now we're cooking with fuel for next season in a brutal Atlantic division. Florida will be a wagon. Habs have taken a step. Bolts won't suck at all. B's will be fine. Sabres look amazing. Sens look amazing.lol This is the division from HELL.

And NOW they need to find TWO top C's. One to replace Larkin and still need that second C.

Yzerman can't draft his way out of this. He needs to make some astute trades to get a 1 and 2 C and hope Kaspar bounces back!

I said he needs to make some big swing trades now. That was before trade request. Guess the players don't agree that not making playoffs isn't a big deal.

I’m guessing Yzerman will want a centre back? If he trades Larkin, who are the Detroit centres left?

This the Wing's C Depth (Becher and Bear as well).

That is uninspiring given a lot of them play wing as well. Kasper being the most promising.

The other big problem is that Larkin as a full NMC so that will lower his return value in trade. But they HAVE to get back a good C, a very good C.

Of course, asking for a trade and being traded are two different things. Maybe he stays and Yzerman does the necessary things to make him want to stay?

If Larkin is traded, will DET fans finally admit Stevie is a bad GM and that the Yzerplan is a failure? Seems like a pretty clear inflection point.

Wasted the entire prime of Larkin.
There’s like maybe 5 Wings fan who still think Yzerman has done a good job. They’re just unfortunately the most vocal

Why would it force a rebuild?

Because you don't have a 1C, no UFAs are coming to Detroit because the team is a directionless tire fire, and Yzerman has shown he doesn't have the guts to make the big trade for futures.

Your core is a winger with nobody to play with and 3 defensemen.

Unfortunately for Wings fans, you've got a Hal Steinbrenner/Brian Cashman dynamic going on. The owner is the son of the iconic man that was in charge for the glory years, and he thinks, "Well, if Dad liked him, then that's good enough for me." So I don't think Yzerman has to worry about his job security for a while, even in spite of this new development.

He's a shit GM, that much is indisputable. With the Sabres making the playoffs this year, the Red Wings are now hold the longest playoff drought in the NHL. Yzerman, by definition, can't be blameless in all of this. With Larkin out the door, there are now zero players on the Wings roster who have been in the playoffs while wearing their uniform. This roster is entirely his responsibility and he hasn't pushed it past mediocrity and underachieving.
