I can’t disagree with any of that.

I would add, IMO there’s a lot of talk about how sports help kids mature with strong role models, but the actual reality of a lot of programs is that it puts them in a weird cultural bubble where they don’t actually get the same responsibilities and rites of passage as non-athletes. Guys who play elite hockey from age 4 to 20 sometimes seem to have developed in an alternate reality when it comes to social norms. It happens in some other contexts as well, like military and the performing arts, where people are in such a bubble that they miss a whole phase of social maturity. We end up with people who don’t even realize how inappropriate they’re behaving, thinking everyone else must be on the same page. In hockey it often seems to crop up around (among other things) this inflated sense of honor and pride over stupid, petty things. Which ironically leads to disgraceful behavior.

Tortorella approves.

I can't say I'm a big fan of Jack Hughes but he had so much time on that breakaway it was like a shootout. And because of the shootout players have a lot more moves in their arsenal on breakaways. I don't think this was hot dogging.

Don Cherry used to say this about on-ice tricks, and I had a similar reaction to Hughes. Yes, a goalie or opponent may feel embarrassed by a deke, but what on what basis do you assume Hughes is trying to embarrass someone? Nobody laughs at a goalie when this stuff happens. Fans don't even notice, (let alone remember) who was on the receiving end of these moves. It seems like a perfect example of projection when the troglodyte faction reacts so righteously with this specific concern.

Vali is a real numbers guy.. Maybe he ran the numbers and knew he needed to make an outlandish statement to drive his social media? Even JG immediately was like WTF?

Maybe dumbest intermission comment ive heard. Makes me think of billy madison.

Absolute clown statement from a clown “analyst”. Remember this was the guy that hyped himself and a lot of Rangers fan that drafting Kakko was better than getting Hughes. His obsession is bordering on psychosis at this point.

Totally get the “instagram hockey” although I think it’s more reserved for the Zegras “Michigan” crap which imo should deserve a cross check to the teeth.

What Jack did is a fairly routine deke that’s been out since ‘93 when Forsberg did it.

I agree with Valiquette here. Those kinds of moves don't belong in the game. Hughes didn't look like he was trying to help his team win there, instead just looking to beat the Rags goalie with a slow and weak move that would have been an embarrassing goal to give up. However, what's actually embarrassing is players trying to use the NHL to promote their Instagram accounts and possibly get influence benefits like sponsorships.

Hate to break it to you but:
NYC is not the Center Of The Hockey Universe

not paying attention to other teams' Color Analysts (is that what he is?) is not the dig you may think it is
Nobody expects you to know everything hockey in NYC. But It ends up much a bigger dig when you come posting about something you're clueless about. Sorry, that's on you.

Depends. Was the goal-scorer a European, or a good ol' Canadian kid?

European - disgusting, pansy, definition of soft and throw him out the league.
Canadian - hard, gritty, scratch the scabs off my shin type of move that will chug down a good old Molson Canadian.

I agree with Valiquette here. Those kinds of moves don't belong in the game. Horrible take, Hughes can do whatever he wants on a breakaway and why would this guy not be confident in Shesterkins ability to save it??

Most of the American broadcasters have the wildest most bias takes. There are a few exceptions like the Lightning play by play guys, but for the most part they’re incredibly bias. These days the Colorado guys are probably the worst.

I remember when Tatar was in MTL he did a between the legs move on a penalty shot and didn't score. He got so much hate for trying a "fancy" move.

The reality is that was what he felt gave him the best chance to score.

The Forsberg always looks bad if the goalie doesn't bite. Valiquette sounds out of touch with modern hockey.
