I think Spott deserves some recognition here. The marlies just clinched the North Division with a much younger team than they clinched with for 2 seasons. Some experts had them fighting for those last spots at the beginning of the season

Marlies are one of the top puck possession teams. They play a very blue coller game as there isnt a ton of skill there, but they are great in their own end. They battle hard and are physical plus are tough to play against.

One of the traits i have liked about spott and this is by watching interviews. He is a players coach but will give out criticism as well.
Example is on saturday against Rochester, marlies blew a 3 goal lead. Where have i seen this before?Anyways, he really went after his leadership core like smithson, holzer, and also the captain smith. Holzer and smithson took bad penalties. He basically said that is totally unacceptable. He called them out after the game and in front of the media. Smith also failed to dump the puck in and than game over. Spott wasnt happy with that either. What happens next day? All 3 respond with great games. Broll also played solid after an "attrocious penalty" as spott described.
They players always respond after spott becomes a critic.

Really he wasnt very popular over here after what happened at the world juniors. I wasnt pleased either but the record speaks for itself.
Great to have him here!

honestly wouldnt mind him as the Leafs coach if we can bring in the right roster players

would be refreshing to see a team play well defensively and actually give it their all

Now making him coach isnt something i consider though, he still needs some more experience in the AHL. I think its setting him and the team up for failure if made coach IMO

He's been coaching since 1994...I'm not sure there's much left for him to learn in the lower levels.

Yes indeed - he has proved a lot of his critics wrong.

We all expected things could only go down after Eakins left but it's fair to say that a new voice & a bit of turnover have had the opposite effect.

Great to see Carrick/Broll amongst others having made terrific progress.

Don't know how long Tampa's John Cooper coached in Norfolk but Spotter is showing all the makings of a coach who may soon be deserving of an opportunity in the show.

I guess so, but ahl is higher than the levels he has coached in. He is off to a solid start but i rather him spend more time.
I wouldnt be totally against it but not sure its the ideal move.

Bring him up in some capacity...And bring up Brennan while we're at it: A D that actually shoots accurately and often.

why not ....paul maurice ,laviollete ,boucher ,all came from somewhere ,we dont beed someone to re invent the wheel,he knows the marlies roster ,his team pays a puck possesion game and lets face it ,the leafs have 3 lines thatcant control a loose puck and the maries have a half dozen NHL ready bottom 6 guys ,hes my pick ,and has been for a while

I agree on Spott. He has a nice track record of success, young and is a fresh voice. Tired of the old retreds.

I guess people are done freaking out with this hire? People judged him wwwwaaaayyyy to fast.

The Marlies are a great team to watch, a shame I'm not in the GTA because I'd buy a lot of tickets to their games. I can't stress enough to go see them if you can... it's night and day from the Leafs.

They are one of the best puck possession teams in the league with fantastic depth and some good veterans to support the young players. It helps when you have the Erik Karlsson of the AHL, aka TJ Brennan. I don't think it's all on Spott though because the Marlies are an underrated team with a lot of underrated prospects, especially on the back-end.

I don't know if Spott is ready for the NHL, even with his coaching record, but I wouldn't be upset if he was promoted in some capacity. I'd leave him with the Marlies though as long as I could for now. We need some sort of steady presence there so that young players going through the system have a familiar presence for at least another year or two.

Honestly, it just goes to show that highly skilled forwards are overrated (at least the ones that don't have a strong two-way game).

If you can't play 200 foot hockey, you're going to have a tough time winning. How much have Ovechkin and the Capitals accomplished? How much have the Leafs accomplished despite on paper it looking like we have a very dangerous team.

Marlies are a no-name team up front, but it's still a deep group, largely built on guys who are committed to defensive play, with a strong blueline, and good goaltending. That's a combination that wins you hockey games.

Ask the Ranger fans about Spott's coaching. Took the character right out of the building with his soft no hitting approach. He refused to have any player with sand paper and shied away from having an enforcer. Players took unwarranted beatings and the team mates looked the other way because they knew Spott would throw them under the bus.

Yeah spott has mentioned that it makes his job easier when we have the best d core in the league.

was thinking Spott could be the potential next Leafs coach. Coached a way ****tier version that Eakins had and are acheiving the same results.

We are pumping his tires way too early. I was one of those that were critical of him when we got him and I still am. This is a development league. We will judge Spott based on how these players develop. I'm overjoyed the marlies clinched their division but one year of playing above expectations (some may call "overachieving") doesn't mean he should sit on the throne.

Maintaining this high level of play not only this year but over the next few years as these players develop will show the true value of Spott. Let's not forget where the leafs were last season and where they are now.

From all accounts. Spott has done a great job with youngsters. The progress of the d man heck has turned brennan into more of a responsible player
Guys like biggs, carrick, ryan, mckegg, broll have showed nice progress
Ashton has found his offensive game which left him under eakins.
Leivo has improved a lot at a young age. Spott did make him a healty scratch back in JAN, but has been really good recently

This is a particular sweet thread because of how many people were critical of Spott. I wouldn't say he's undoubtedly proven himself but he's definitely exceeded the expectations of many when he was hired. As mentioned, he has a much younger roster to work with and has coached them to a division championship. But kudos to the players, they exemplify something that the Leafs sorely lack - commitment and work ethic. The Marlies play like a 6 man unit where everyone has a role and commits to it.

But we are preparing them for NHL success. And it's way too early to make any claim that these guys will be successful at an NHL level yet. Although they would probably be an upgrade over the team we have right now, but that's not saying much.

I do agree he needs more time but is off to a nice start
