Starfield - Bethesda Softworks - Release Date - Sep 6th 2023

This game really needs maps for the cities. Last night, I spent hours running around New Atlantis, doing quests, and it felt like a chore just following the on-screen markers everywhere. It'd be so much better if, instead, we could bring up a map, look for our destination on it, figure out how best to get there and then have to look around that area for the person or object that we're meant to interact with. That would be more engaging, realistic and rewarding. I can only imagine that Bethesda wanted us discover areas in person, without seeing them on maps first, but such exploration is undermined by HUD markers leading us around, anyways. We can turn those off and try to complete quests without them, but that's hard to do without something to refer to. If we can use Google Maps to navigate and find places of interest in 2023, you'd think that there'd be something available for cities of the future.

This game really needs maps for the cities. Last night, I spent hours running around New Atlantis and it felt more like a chore because I had to mark quests active and follow the on-screen markers everywhere to complete them. It'd be so much better if we could bring up a map, look for our destination on it, figure out how best to get there and then have to look around the area for the person/object that we're meant to interact. That would be more engaging, realistic and rewarding. We can turn off markers and try to do that, but it's not very feasible without decent maps to refer to. It's a futuristic game, so it would make sense for maps of each city to be automatically updated to our watches/PDAs as soon as we set foot in each city.

The worst game for this was ES: Oblivion with the Imperial City.

Just big and empty except for Quest Givers and I just followed the arrows around.

Enjoying it quite a bit so far, only did the main quest to get to New Atlantis and the Lodge then have been doing the side stuff since, so easy to get off tangent on side quests and random stuff

Yeah, that was a pain because nearly every business and residence looked the same on the outside and you had to enter them to learn what they were. At least in Starfield, every business has a very distinct facade and a logo in big letters so that you can tell from a distance what it is. I really appreciate that, but everything is also so spread out. It's like trying to navigate Disneyland without the map that you receive when you enter.

Agreed!

I do like how you can turn on your scanner and move your cursor over the on-screen quest marker to get those white arrows on the ground to follow to your objective. That’s helped me find my way numerous times now. But I still want more detailed surface maps. Or at least more detailed maps of cities.

Finally got to boot it up last night and played several hours. Loving it but it’s a steep learning curve, and the map system does suck. Got lost doing side stuff. Shooting feels a lot better than I thought.

I just started Act III in Boulders Gate and have told myself I CANNOT do my normal move of stopping that near the end and starting something new, but god damn if this isn't giving me the itch to do just that. And I am loving BG3. But it's almost like Bethesda makes these games for me directly. I need to stop reading this thread until I finish BG3 (and my fiance's family leaves after their visit next week...).

I'm waiting a couple of weeks, finishing BG3, to give the modders time to fix the game.

13 hours in and haven’t touched crafting, ouposting, ship building and barely have touched surveying.

Shout out to Can-Nuck. Gotta be my favourite canned bacon, pancakes and poutine.

The food stuff in the game is awesome.

Same except for surveying. I’ve been surveying a lot, but more so because I want to. I don’t really want to do most of the other stuff so I’m fine to leave it alone as long as I can.

It happens once you visit locations.

Surveying with the scanner length skills is so key.

What happens? More detailed maps after you visit a city? I haven’t noticed that. I still just get the location icon with a blank map around it. What do you have to zoom in more or something?

took a while to figure out I didn't need to have my mining laser tool equipped in a spot because it brings it out automatically when i use the scan feature lol. Having fun so far
Yeah, that's a good tip. Another useful one that I learned is that you don't use oxygen when using your booster pack, so you can reduce how often you have to stop and catch your breath by staying in the air as much as possible. It's especially a help when encumbered. You need to put a skill point into boosters before you can use them, though, so that's a good use of one of the first skill points that players get.

Another tip is that stealing is a lot easier if you put at least one point into the Stealth skill, since it adds a stealth meter to the screen while you're crouching to tell you if anyone can see you.

BTW, on the topic of stealing, I tried the ol' "basket over the NPC's head" trick that was fun to do in Skyrim and it didn't work. Sad.

Played like 6 or 7 hours so far and enjoyed it a lot. My only two real complaints are that the gunfights are pretty meh and it really kills me how quickly I become encumbered. I’m the type that loves to explore every room and find things but you really can’t take much with how limited space you start off with.

At least when you are overencumbered you can still walk at a decent pace, and just stop here and there to let your oxygen replenish, not like Fallout when it makes you move at a snails pace if you are one Nuka Cola over the limit, and then you can offload the extra stuff into the ships cargo hold to sell off later

Note that you can give your companions things to carry, so it helps a lot to have one with you. Just remember to also sell stuff from their inventories when you're at vendors. Also, as I just noted, using a booster pack helps a good bit while encumbered. Of course, also rank up the Weight Lifting skill as quickly as you can.
