Starfield - Bethesda Softworks - Release Date - Sep 6th 2023

Yikes, only a 7 from IGN.

Definitely doesn't look like GOTY like a lot were thinking. Very average reviews coming in.

There’s also some very strong reviews. Looks like it could be still be quite prevalent on many goty lists at the end of the year.
Reading the major negatives though, I can't understand how some places are reviewing it as a perfect game, or even a 90. Seems some sites over hyped it so much previously that they didn't want to put it down now.

It’s sitting at 90 on Metacritic, and 87 on Opencritic…

Seems like a lot of varying opinions. I wonder how tough it is to review a massive game like this.

Any reviews this early seem undercooked. How could anyone have spent enough time with it to give it an accurate rating beyond initial impressions?

Yeah for sure, I don’t think anyone has hyped it as a perfect game, even with the high scores it’s gotten. Usually doesn’t Indicate perfection but more or less their experience with their game. Obviously I can’t score a game until I’ve played it, but it seems like a typical Bethesda game, fun but flawed. Even Skyrim, which is indeed a masterpiece to many, was never regarded as perfect but still a masterpiece.

On a side note, IGN rated Cyberpunk 2077 9/10 upon launch. They should have very little credibility after that

Not surprised the game is ranging widely from 7-10. It’s a new IP and people expect different things out of a BGS game. Some of the cons given in the reviews seem bizarre too. Like it being a slow burn is somehow inherently negative.

Me? While I doubt I will like it as much as Morrowind or Oblivion already it seems like it will be a much better game (to me) than Fallout 3 and 4. The cities look very improved and the dialogue, while not New Vegas level by any means, looks like it’s better than Skyrim and esp Fallout 4.

The PC version of Cyberpunk has a metacritic score of 86. A 9/10 score is not an outlier
There were a dozen or so MAJOR flaws with that game on launch. A 9/10 is absurd.

Videogame reviews seem to be an industry of their own in some unfortunate ways so it’s tough to give them any significant weight

I'm going into it like I go into every new Bethesda title: I'm looking for the small stories and details that make Bethesda games so rich, and I'm not looking for the flaws. I know there will be flaws. Twelve years and multiple paid updates later, Skyrim is borderline unplayable without the Unofficial Patch. But I trust BGS to produce a quality product and immersive world, and that's what I as a gamer care about. Just like with Cyberpunk 2077 at launch, I didn't care that sometimes the motorcycle ends up half underground when I call it to me, but I enjoyed the hell out of missions like All Foods to get the flathead, etc. Maybe I'm easily impressed, but a beautiful game that mostly works with good storytelling and an immersive world and decent plot is good enough for me.

The next four hours and change are going to crawl.

You still give IGN credit? I stopped with them after they made the entire Hogwarts Review about culture war BS that had nothing to do with the actual game.

You’re right, i enjoy running around massive areas of nothing. No man sky did wonderful with that too when it was first released.

They’re for mining. The direct even said most planets don’t have life, just resources. Which is not only true to life, but what should have been expected the whole time. It’s not a space sim, it’s a space rpg with fps and sim flavour.

Consensus seems to be that it's mostly just another Bethesda game, which is enough to kill the little interest I had. Maybe explains why they refused to send so many outlets review codes.

I must have missed them because I played the game on PC day 1 and a score of 86 reflects my experience pretty accurately.

Extremely excited for this one. One of those games I already know I'll like a lot.

I ordered the Constellation edition though and it arrives tomorrow instead of tonight so I'll have to wait for my code until tomorrow sadly. It's a digital code but instead of emailing it it's etched on something in the box

It had an extremely rough launch. No doubt part of the reaction was that The Witcher 3 is an impossible follow-up act.. but it was a mess and disappointing asf for what CDPR hyped it up to be.

I don't really understand this thought process. Bethesda games all have a few similar core principles since Morrowind but their quality has a big spectrum. To me Morrowind is a 9.5/10 game. Oblivion GOTY probably an 8.5. Fallout 3 is really not good imo and is more like a 6/10. Skyrim GOTY probably an 8.5. Fallout 4 is a 6.5/10. Not counting New Vegas which they didn't make, but that was a 9/10 imo.

Starfield to me looks like it might fall around where Oblivion and Skyrim are, which I would love after the disappointing direction that was Fallout 4 - but we'll see.

Yea just read an article on that. That’s pretty bush league not sending out early review copies to places they thought wouldn’t rate their game high. And shipping off earlier copies to youtubers that have been hyping the game up. Will be interesting to see if the average scores drops as the days go by.

ACG’s review is usually always the best one to watch.

Yea, dunno if I care about any other reviews besides ACG, Digital Foundry and maybe guys like SkillUp or Gameranx. Newspapers and journo outlets are total hacks besides a couple people per outlet.
