While I don't disagree about Kucherov, Stamkos put up the most points of his career in a season where Kuch missed pretty much half of it. Tampa's system is nuts and allows crazy talented dudes to flourish.I think it's a lot simpler than that. Nikita Kucherov is likely the best playmaking winger in the history of the game. Find another one of those and Stamkos will produce again.
He was 31 at that time though. While I don't disagree about Kucherov, Stamkos put up the most points of his career in a season where Kuch missed pretty much half of it. Tampa's system is nuts and allows crazy talented dudes to flourish.
Agreed. I hope no one's taking it as me disparaging anything or anyone, I'm just really in awe of Tampa's program. He was 31 at that time though.
He's now 35 and clearly not the same player.

Statistically, those extra $15m don’t make a generational difference at all.
The immediately preceding generation squanders that wealth and are most likely to not build on it at all

NEW YORK - When Stephen Lovell used to visit his grandparents as a kid, it was like entering the world of Cole Porter or "The Great Gatsby."torontosun.com
You just described "cooked."Stamkos is not cooked.
He is just what you can expect from a player with so much mileage (17 seasons and a lot of playoff games) and serious injuries which already slowed him down and everyone knows it.
Combining it with the fact that he is playing for a bad team and not having Kucherov as playmaker his numbers absolutly make sense. Everything else would have been surprising. He was not known as playdriver, he is still known for his shot.
A lot of good or great players are already retired after 17 seasons.
Only very few play 20 seasons and can keep up like Crosby and Ovechkin
This will be for sure his last contract.
Nope.You just described "cooked."
Stamkos last year: 81 points in 79 gamesNope.
He is decling a bit every year, but he is not done yet.
He is not falling off a cliff this year. He just does not have the same team around him.
Big difference
But maybe he will be cooked in a year or two
New team, new team mates. Worse team....Stamkos last year: 81 points in 79 games
Stamkos this year: 46 points in 76 games
He's cooked. Nothing to be ashamed about, as you pointed out it happens to everyone not named Crosby or Ovechkin. Don't need to beat around the bush though
A guy that sees a significant drop off in production when they are not longer playing in the most favorable environment possible is the definition of cooked.New team, new team mates. Worse team....
I don't think he is much worse than last year.
I even think he will bounce back to 55 to 60 points next year and steadily decline the last two years of his contract.
We will see.
Maybe even earlier?Looks like he will retire after his current contract is up.
The fact that it shouldn't be a surprise that he's cooked does not changed that he's cooked. At least "cooked" in the context of an 8m contract.Nope.

In fact Brisebois did not walk away from Stammer. Stammer walked away from Tampa. Brisebois offered him a retirement contract. The rumour was Brisebois offered an 8 year deal around $3.5m plus with a guarantee cushy office job when he retired. Stammer felt insulted by that deal and took the deal from Trotz. The money was roughly the same, but the Nashville deal was shorter and $4m more over the career.Stamkos is a prime example of elite gm versus rookie
Brisbois walks away from a franchise icon. Lifelong bolt. Captain. A guy that wanted to retire a bolt
Trots signs him to 8*4.
Hence Tampa knew what they were doing. Great organizations make the tough and unpopular decisions sometimes.Stamkos last year: 81 points in 79 games

Trotz went full Yzerman, and thankfully beat him out in signing Stamkos.
Offering stamkos a 3.5 aav was walking away. It was saying you're no longer a high end nhl player. In fact Brisebois did not walk away from Stammer. Stammer walked away from Tampa. Tampa fans told everyone the deal Trotz gave was terrible. I remember arguing with Nashville fans that Stammer was not a good fit in Nashville and that he was primed for a steep decline. One that Tampa fans had seen coming for years. The only reason no one else saw it was because Kuch was playing weekend at Bernie's with Stammers body. One Nashville fan tried telling me that Stammer would probably put up the close to the same stats because Josi and Forsberg were equal to Hedman and Kuch feeding Stammer.

Insulting a franchise icon and captain is walking away
In his defense, Nashville has no one that gets him the puck on the PP in a good shooting position. It's constantly in his skates, ahead/behind him and this is where Kucherov is so good. Honestly, Nashville doesn't have any great playmakers which is causing a lot of this years problems. It's not fun to watch, you see Stamkos waiting on the dot only to receive a pass that he can't do anything with.Stamkos last year: 81 points in 79 games

Yeah, the idea that anyone was gonna get juice from Stamkos like Kucherov did... I mean, Kucherov I'd just a whole different thing from a regular NHL playmaker. Or even a great one.In fact Brisebois did not walk away from Stammer. Stammer walked away from Tampa. Brisebois offered him a retirement contract. I'll bet that makes Barry Trotz sleep better at night.Stamkos is still richer than you or your ancestors will ever be and could beat you up bad irl
