Happy Kakko

Pretty wild. But also respect for the Habs kid. He has guts. And funny comment from Reaves. ‘Didn’t know him. Was worried he might be some killer from the AHL’.

A thought I just had is that we are now at the point in history where someone named Cayden is old enough to play professional sports. It is only going to get worse from here on out.
Finn is nipping at Cayden’s heels. Oh dear!

That second goal off the rebound for Montreal was actually deflected by the Habs on the way in after being shot through Nemeth's legs which is why Shesty left such a fat rebound. I was giving him a hard time for his rebounds but that one wasn't on him.

Edit: Would really like to see Lundqvist engage the forward with the deflection sooner, he may not have stopped the tip but he would have prevented the rebound being put in if he had tied him up or been closed to the eventual rebound by covering his man. No one else for him to cover on that play so it's not really confusing for him *shrug*
In general I want the rangers to engage quicker and stop slowing down and waving their sticks at attackers. Play through them. They’re doing it more and getting better. And I’m sure the coaches are saying it too. More of a general comment, I think Nils has generally been good.

Kakko is like buddy the elf in a way. Everything is so new to him all the time lol. Came down from the North Pole

he genuinely looked like he never saw someone beat up before and he loved it.

like he hasn’t had sushi yet or kissed a girl.
Strong reference. I love it!

So they fined Gallagher.

players just don’t get suspended for egregious shit they do to us. We are dead to the department of player discipline after Dolans statement last year.

probably before that too…. Lol
A fine is fine, in my opinion. I was surprised it got so much attention. Didn’t seem like much to me. And the power play effectively sealed the win for us. That’s a nice trade off. I’m sure Goodrow agrees.

Agreed. I’ll take the 2 points. I do want to see some wrath from this team eventually.

To answer Bob Santos' question, no that does not make us contenders.

Yes we are absolutely going to make the playoffs and probably we are capable of beating any individual team in a seven game series because we have a goalie capable of getting super hot and some stars that could scorch their way through a series or two.

And again in theory it is an outside possibility that we remain hot and become one-offs like the Blues.

But we shouldn't be counting on that; we should be trying to get into the category of elite teams that win 77% of the Cups, not the category of non-elite teams that win 23% of them (and I'll argue actually that a one-time winner like Boston or Washington in that time frame actually possessed all the key pieces to win more than one time, just didn't.... which is evidence of exactly how flippin' hard it is to win even one even with way more talent than we currently have. With this analysis it would mean teams that are one-offs talent-wise have won just 1 of the last 13 Cups, or 7%).

WTF are "elite teams"? Is that a column in the standings that I missed? Isn't every team in the SCF an "elite team"? You can't even define what an "elite 2C" is.

Yeah, no, I would never claim a team like Montreal is an elite team despite getting to the SCF.

That was a good team that went on a hot run. Surely you concede there is a difference between a team like Montreal and a team like Tampa the past few years, or the Penguins of the past decade, etc.

Strome's looked great, competing for pucks along the boards in the O zone and coming back on D and he and Panarin are starting to develop chemistry with Kakko. Can't win a cup with him? Maybe, maybe not, I think our 3rd D pairing though is the bigger problem in a long playoff series.

last two games they looked like they started to trust him.

7 different teams won the SC over the past decade. We're not Tampa or the Penguins. You're going to have to get over that.

So....for poops and giggles....just whom do you consider to be the elite clubs in the Eastern Conference that we won't beat in 7 ....plus we still have 10 ? Million for rentals this season and better 3rd duo heating up in the oven ...consider it all and another 65 games under Gallant .
Carolina and Washington

7 different teams won the SC over the past decade.

Yet over the past 13 years, 77% of the Cups have been won by only 4 teams.

A grand total of 3 other Cups in that span were won by 3 other teams. Of those three teams, I'd probably classify 2 of them as good enough/"elite," enough to win multiple times - luck or bad matchups just prevented them. Those two teams I'd say were Boston and Washington.

The Blues were the only non-elite team in the entire past 13 years to win a Cup. So it's possible. Just not what you should be aiming for if you actually want to win something cause you are talking about single digit percent chances.

We're not Tampa or the Penguins. You're going to have to get over that.

Well, we clearly don't have a Crosby and Malkin combo from their age 18 years.

But it would not be impossible for us to continue to accumulate some more high end talent.

Again, I think we need another top center and another top winger, along with the development of Laf/Kakko/Chytil and the maintenance of Panarin, Zibanejad and Kreider at their levels.

We weren't really that far from pulling off an Eichel trade so it's not impossible. And if Kravtsov returns there is hopefully another of the pieces there.

I'd say that will put is in a top, top echelon. The Rangers do have to have their eyes on impending declines of Kreider, Zibanejad and Panarin though, and have options to replace down the line. Perhaps Othmann is a Kreider replacement on some level.

The younger we can get these pieces the better, because that's all the longer we can compete for Cups. I want multiple rings here, not just one. You go on a Blues-like Cup run out of no where, you can pretty much take it to the bank that that's all you're gonna get.

We certainly have money to load up at the deadline if we want

don’t forget we won a Cup by sacrificing skill for more grit in 94. Poo poo it all u want but come playoff time not much has changed.

I don’t think Washington would beat us in a series. In fact I’d be shocked if they did

to me it’s Carolina and the islanders if they get there. Tampa of course with Vas but no one else really scares me.

Calgary if they get that far is a beast out of the West

Rangers should seriously consider getting seattle to talk about yanni gourde. They aren’t Vegas they need a full build with kids. They should start trying to get younger ASAP

I think we're finishing the season at least top 5 in the standings, even if we don't end up with the President's Trophy.

The Rangers are in a unique situation where they have almost unlimited cap space this year, that basically evaporates in the offseason. Their plan should be to go heavy on rentals if they are in the thick of things (which we all should expect at this point). They have plenty of ammunition to do so and they could add multiple player's full salaries to keep prices down.

(side note: Id also trade Lundkvist for Gourde)

I’d overpay for gourde honestly and I’d start with kravtsov and Lundkvist if need be.

I’d then self rent Strome for the cup run but I’d let him walk in the off-season if I had gourde. Maybe wishful thinking but seattle would be dumb to hold veterans right now. They should sell everything. Including Giordano if they can
