what the greyhounds have not done in the past and for a long time now is trade there overage
players or 19 year old impact players at the deadline when they reasonably haven't had a chance
to making a deep run. Raftis has been reluctant to trade away high end players at the deadline
to set himself up for the years to follow. That may be his only downfall. At some point you have
to realize your team is not good enough in one particular year so knowing the ontario hockey league
is cyclical where you should be able to compete for a championship at least once every 3-4 years,
he doesn't allow himself to accumulate draft picks and or young talent so they become impact
players when they reach 19.
The trade-off is sometimes hard for fans though. Given the uncertainty of Covid on the league, it's riskier than ever to trade for future players. I think Raftis will make some bigger moves over the next couple seasons.

It's really a shame, since he drafts so well. Trading is definitely not his strength. Hopefully he is aware and working on it.

im going to play devils advicote a bit, maybe im being unfair. i think alot of the success came when vic was the director of scouting, the 00,01 and 02s like keirns and kartye were his drafts. since he and 3/4 other scouts left, have they had the same level of success? im not sure.

Good point. Our 03 group was weak, but then again who's wasn't? Tough to judge the 04s and younger yet as they are still just getting going.

mignosa was an underage with those stats, if he had a real u16 i bet his production would project better, but agree on others.
Yes. When I was reading on Twitter back into the 05’ draft year I recall mignosa was projected to go into the 1st round and even high 1st round on some projectory’s. Not sure what happened with going 36th overall, but I think it’s fine to say Raftis got a steal. We’ll see how the year goes!

i would be careful with those who project, they often over hype players. the one who got the most media would call players who went undrafted 'studs'

Virgilio signs with the Soo. Either had a massive following out with Michigan/Tri-City or Soo opened their wallet for him. Either way, huge signing. They didn't take him till the 4th round so no way Soo saw this coming year 1 either. He would've been a top 2 D-man taken in the last draft

I agree but the success is showing past that now.

Nice. Great draft by SSM. For me, Virgilio signing makes their draft among the top 5 along with Saginaw, Oshawa, Barrie, and OS.

It could be the hounds opening their wallet. It also could be that Michigan is in a bit of an uncertain time and the thought of a stable, well run ohl team that has developed and graduated numerous players and coaches in the last 10 years is a viable option.

Both are possibilities.

Cheers

For the OHL's sake, let's hope Michigan recruits are worried about some extended uncertainty and we stop losing a lot of the top guys to them lol

Will need another very good draft and a big enough sell before getting back to contender status, I think.
A big sell isn't really feasible or necessary. All of our high value players are young and will be around for a couple of years. There's also a solid chance that the team will be too good to justify a a sell off, especially if Lutz and/or McGroarty come.

Solid drafts are always a necessity and we have the picks to make that happen. This team drafts well enough that they don't need a bunch if extra picks to find players.

A few picks to make a deadline acquisition in a few year's time would be nice. If McGroarty and Lutz come I could see dealing Watson. Tynan too. Also perhaps a defenseman like Toms who might get buried and leapfrogged by Virgilio.

I will be tougher for the hounds to make up ground over 2-3 years without the benefit of a sell.
I’d say SSM is a bit behind Saginaw.
Flint & OS are way ahead of the Soo in 2003-05 born, also had among the top drafts of ‘06, and have more future draft picks.
Guelph, Kitchener, London will have better luck with the USNTDP/NCAA players than SSM; Erie, Flint, Saginaw, Sarnia, Windsor might too.

So essentially you see us lining up as the worst team in the Conference. That's a real shocker. I don't think Flint is ahead of us at all in the 03-05 range, but time will tell.

It's also an odd time to slam Raftis' recruitment skills after getting perhaps the biggest coup of the draft so far and signals that more may be coming.
