Hoffman could be the steal of all steals thanks to his Tommy John surgery.

He's young enough where it could only be a one time issue.

Top 3 talent taken at #9, expecting to be signed for much less than the slotted amount for that draft position

Yeah, that's a win ... Very good risk reward management

Love it!

Found a scouting report on Thomas:

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/...-profile-for-toronto-blue-jays-5th-round-pick

Not bad. the #s project out to him being MLB average to above average pretty much clean across the board. Could be an average everyday CF or a good corner OF or backup/utility OF.

Getting down away from the top rounds, you could do worse than picking a guy that's at worst all-around MLB caibre with no obvious holes.

Apparently Lane Thomas already struck a deal with the Jays. Doesn't seem like such a tough sign considering he's touted as a 1D CF (according to this guy). Though the Jays actually drafted him as an RF.

He's listed as a RF right now, but the report I heard said he could shift to CF because of his athleticism, or even move to the IF maybe.

Looks like a punt pick. 7-10 college seniors and save up some money to get a good talent or two in the 11+ rounds.

whats a punt pick?

Drafting a player rated lower because he'll sign for less than the designated slot value (like a college senior who would have little leverage) allowing the team to use the difference between what they paid and what they had available on other picks.

Draft money is allotted to every player. To save money teams will or aa at least will "punt a pick" to save money to use elsewhere. Generally say a 7th round pick you have a little over 150k to sign him. You draft a college kid that isn't very good but will sign a contract for 5 or 10 k and never play baseball again and just to try his luck and catch on. Saving them 140k to use on a high end prospect. AA has punted up to 5 picks in the past but you must sign them to get the money to use. This can also only be done in the first 10 rounds.

In a perfect world, it's a college senior who you end giving a tryout to.
