As I asked the other gentleman,
What outstanding work did he do (and lets change this to the AHL because it still doesn’t matter) that would make anyone think this Kid could be a middle 6 forward this year? I think im the one “ROFL” at these ridiculously high expectations some of you come up with. You either are unrealistic or you simply havent been around long enough to have experienced countless prospects not go from being studs in the AHL to even an everyday NHLer, let alone a guaranteed middle 6 forward or higher. And Barron hasn’t even been a “stud” at the AHL.
Don’t worry I know what you’re going to say, ‘he was a PPG player last year blah blah blah’ — what, against the same 4 teams on the schedule in a shortened season? I mean cmon, I hope Barron becomes a serious player as much as the next fan here, but to pencil him as a real possibility for anything more than a 4th line role to start the season (and quite frankly it could last all season) is just setting yourself up for unnecessary disappointment. He may not even make the team out of camp because the organization would rather him get 1st line minutes in Hartford, aka because he wasnt going to get anything more than 4th line minutes at the NHL level.
Nope its not personal, I am just not the one who said this kid could be a middle 6 option out of the gate. Be realistic.
think they are intent on keeping Barron as a center. Don’t think he has the offensive chops to hang with any of the talent we have in our top 6. I do think he’s being groomed for the long term 3 C option. It’s likely if he has a great camp thats really the only position where they would stick him, depending on the style Gallant wants his bottom 6 to play.
He might be a casualty to the numbers game and be forced down to the A until a trade/ injury happens.
I just don’t know what keeping him in the AHL for a full year does for his development if he’s ready for a 3rd line role. I also don’t think they would keep him around as a 4th line wing option. Between Hunt, Reaves, Blais ( another numbers game victim), and Richards in the A, that’s plenty of 4th line depth.
It’s all going to come down to camp and what Gallant envisions the role of his bottom 6 to be.
If Barron plays lights out and forces Gallant to keep him up with the rangers, you’ll likely see him play in a 3rd line capacity. If he has a meh camp, they will send him down for a half or full year.
I don’t know what more he needs to work on in Hartford that he can’t work on practicing with the rangers. He’s not going to get an added level of offense to him game, he doesn’t need to add muscle or Grow at this point, He’s a smart kid and looks to think the game well, I just don’t see a huge benefit of keeping him down there.
Last season, the AHL wasn’t strong and his stint with the rangers wasn’t very long, but they are not nothing either. They are barometers to see if the kid looks out of place or can he keep up his play at the NHL level?
Camp and Preseason are going to be the big tests to see how well he does. If Gallant feels Barron fits his 3rd line C role, is expect him to stay up with the big club. Whatever players fit Gallants scheme/vision best are the players that should make the team.
I had when fans suggest to send the better player down to the A because they can. I want the guys on the team that give us the best chance to win. Whoever they are.
