stop the damn dropback pass at least for a few games...and also maybe win ONE faceoff in the offense zone?? lol
At least adjust. If they guy carrying it be it Marner/Nylander and Matthews, then they need to dump it and chase.

It's sooooooooo predictable. Leafs want to drop out their own blueline, the trailing forward carries it to the offensive blue line, passes it the winger on the blue line, who then diverts into the zone and drops it back to the d-man. If some HFboard poster can see they obvious, I'm pretty sure other teams have got them locked down. You can see the opposing team lining up at the blue line to pressure that winger, almost daring them to dump and chase.

IMO you start playing Muzzin or Brodie out there with a plan to set up point shot one timers and get some traffic in front, and our whole PP changes overnight.

What the hell is our Lord Commander of Strategy doing ? Isn’t it his only job to come up with innovative ideas ?

One key issue is having two non shooting threats in shooters positions

But the biggest issue is lack of movement followed by forcing passes and shots.

This is the worst slump but in previous years, nearly every season the PP started off like a house on fire only to go in a massive slump once teams adjusted which is part of the reason they’ve been bounced in the first round

That's true and true about the offense in general but every year before last they've been consistent enough to finish top 3 even with cold spells. It just looks straight up broken right now.

Get Rielly off the top PP. He clearly can't QB, a lot of the blame is on him.

He's done it perfectly well for years and no one else on this defense comes close to him offensively, or transition/skating wise. Removing Rielly solves absolutely nothing while creating more problems.

We're already removing one threat by employing Rielly at the point with his inability to get a shot through traffic.

And then we further handicap ourselves by putting useless turds like Thornton and Simmonds too.

Whoever is making these decisions needs a slap.

A PP needs more than one shooting threat. Team are probably laughing at how easy we are to defend.

The majority of his PP points have come from making 5 foot passes to Marner and Matthews. What is it that people see in Rielly that's so irreplaceable, I'm seriously trying to understand.

You look at the elite PP Dmen like Hedman, Carlson, Krug, Makar... these guy's bread and butter is their bomb from the point that they know how to put through traffic. Rielly does not have this ability.

Nobody else on our team does either. Rielly has the best offensive tools of all our defensemen. He's got a good wrist shot. He's fast and agile which helps with zone entries. He doesn't handle the puck like a grenade. He passes as well as anyone on the backend.

I don't see how downgrading him to someone else from our blueline solves anything.

When our powerplay was working this year and going back into last we had movement at all positions, with Rielly also spending time off the point roving the zone. He's by far best suited for a dynamic, moving pp group

It’s pretty clear Malhotra has to be removed from his position. You don’t have to fire him, just reassign him to face off coach or something.

He’s over coached our extremely talented forwards to the point where the PP is the same dull predictable garbage every game. If we all can see what they’re going to do, you can be damn sure the teams that are scouting them know as well.

Agreed. He needs to get off the PP ASAP. Stop the stupid predictable drop pass in the neutral zone and please get a decent set up in the offensive zone.

Marner goes to goal line beside and behind the net. He is not a threat as a shooter so get him off the top of the circle.

Then I would put JT as net front but also slides to slot when mitch has the puck behind or beside the net.

Will and matty are the two shooters at the top if circle ready for one timers or back door plays. Pass could come from the D at the blue line, cross zone from each other, or from mitch.

Brodie replaces Rielly as other shooter who has a slap shot. Or put Galchenyuk.

Just by doing this you have 4 players that are actual threats to shoot and score vs only matthews on the top PP

Lastly, play this unit for 1:30 at least

I think a sports psychologist might help. I think the longer the drought drags on the more this is affecting them mentally.

Very simple. Have a dynamic PP. A team with Matthews, Marner and Nylander should not have a stagnant PP in the zone. That's like telling Malkin, Kane and Backstrom (play style wise) to not move when they're in the zone. Have Matthews as a threat for a one timer and Nylander as a threat to rip it from either half wall. Rielly is a bad QB for the PP. Would legitimately prefer Liljegren or Sandin in that role. No need for 4th liners on the PP.
