Solutions to the PP

  • We're expecting server maintenance on March 3rd starting at midnight, there may be downtime during the work.
  • Xenforo Cloud has upgraded us to version 2.3.6. Please report any issues you experience.
Please...just forfeit the powerplay.

I'm actually getting pissed when we get a powerplay opportunity. Especially if we're losing. It feels like we have to kill off the powerplay before we can get back to business and score. o_O

take the 4th liners and Rielly off the top PP unit, and go with the 4 best forwards and Brodie or Sandin. Let them figure it out without overcoaching them

We don't need to change personnel on the PP. We need a new system. The best chances we had on the PP last night was when the puck got worked down low. It's hilarious how easy it would be to defend our PP. Apply pressure to the puck carrier on the wall, Have your stick in the lane going back to the point, because we refuse to throw the puck down in the corner. Largely because no one goes there when pressure is applied. Forces our wall guys to make a backhand sauce to the point over a stick in the lane, or a no look pass to the bumper who is tightly checked. so f***ing predictable. Even if we do get a shot off, the rebounds have never bounced in our favor. Far more predictable to control the puck vs. trying to get a goal off of a rebound. Ask yourself how many goals EDM, or WASH or any high powered PP generate off of rebounds? not many. And that is certainly not the focal point of their PP plan. Any rebound goal they generate on the PP is a byproduct of good puck movement and getting PK'ers out of position. As for the entry, The drop back pass can look dumb when it doesn't work, but it has not really been the issue. It's the easy thing to point out as it looks goofy when it blows up. Its been decently effective. I will agree, it doesn't need to happen every entry though. Where we often lose possession on entry is at the blue line after the drop pass. Guy receiving the drop either wheels in the zone on his own or does a give and go with the wingers on the wall at the blue. That give and go has been sloppy, and resulted in the majority of our failed zone entries. But overall our entries have been ok. We almost always set up no problem. We just turn the puck over way too easily when set up. Because of our predictable as hell umbrella system

Malhotra has really turned gold into lead here, hasn't he?

this kind of streak shouldn't even be possible when the best goalscorer in the league is on your team.

I agree Keefe's comments are a bit of a cop-out. when things aren't working, it's the job of the coaching staff to come up with new strategies and ways to do things.

I think the things they should try next are:

a) load up the top unit again
b) give Robertson some touches
c) start concentrating on getting the shot on goal more quickly when we have control in the zone. the passing has become too slow and measured a lot of the time, especially the type of passing that opens up seams...far too often we keep on holding too long after the pass, allowing the PK to get back into position again. this makes it even harder to exploit that you have an extra man on the ice, which is the entire point of the exercise

We need to utilize Tavares in the bumper position. When we had a top 10 power play the last two years that is what we did.

also go 5 forwards for the love of God and hey Rielly off the top unit. Have Marner man the point from the right side. Matthews and Nylander on their strong sides. For their signature cross seam pass

Thornton
Matthews - Tavares - Nylander
Marner

I don’t know why they went away from what

Try some different forwards. Let the big guns sit the next 4 or 5 out on the bench. They'll get results once they get the next chance after that.

Need more puck support. The game plan for opposing PK has been to be over aggressive to the puck carriers on the walls. Only option we present is a play back to the point or a low percentage pass to a guy who is tightly checked in the bumper. Need to wrap that puck below the net. I'd rather engage in a puck battle below the goal line than at the top of the circle. Especially in an umbrella setup where if you lose that wall battle you only 1 defensively deficient D-Man in Rielly at the point to man an odd man rush potentially. When you engage in a puck battle below the net, at least one of the PK'ers is below the goal, most likely 2. therefore if you win that battle, there is nothing but space for the guys above the goal line once that puck is won. Not to mention you have the PK'ers scrambling to get back in position. We hardly ever do that in our current system. Pretty straight forward shit. Not sure what the hold up is to implement more of this is. We have Hyman and Thornton who are perfect for that below the goal line role. Both can win a board battle and both can dish a puck.

We still don't have a shot from the point, and until we do, defenses will not respect the point shot.
This leaves the box down low to cover 4 players, and that is just fine.

Maybe, instead of having a pentagon with a single player on the point, invert the pentagon and put a single player behind the net, 2 in the slot and 2 closer to the edge of the circles beside the boards.

You may be in the wrong thread. The 'i don't like our best defenseman' thread is further down.

Rielly's been terrible on the PP. Can't get a shot through, how many times does he turn it over at the blue line ? He's been the worst player on the PP throughout this stretch, almost everytime the puck gets turned over, it's him or Marner doing some bs along the blue line.

Rielly's been terrible on the PP
I'm not sure I'd say he's been terrible. He is not the designed shooter on the PP. Malhotra has him being the guy who sets up Matthews and Marner on he walls. Puck comes back to Rielly, and his job has been to draw a guy up top and dish to one of those guys to walk in for the shot or cross seam dish. It worked early on until teams figured out not to ever challenge Rielly at the point because he will never shoot. SO by the time he dishes to Marner or Matthews they have no time to get a shot off, and the cross seam has already been taken away. But as for Rielly, he is likely doing exactly what Manny is asking of him IMO. Unfortunately it is not working anymore. Not sure I'd blame him entirely Because they've had Muzz and Brodie fail in the same capacity. I am so passionate about how flawed this PP system has been, and truthfully I don't blame any of the players. The coaching staff (Manny especially) needs to be figured out by R1, because we could easily lose first round again if we lose the special teams battle. If anything the lack of special teams success that we have had is a true testament to how good this 1st place team really is. Fixing this should be our only focus right now TBH. The only thing that will hold us back from winning it all

Ya rielly lacks the shot threat but his speed, puck retrieval, and confidence holding the puck makes him by far our best option on the pp.

Rielly is not a threat at all to shoot and neither is Marner. So you have pretty much a whole side of the ice the other team knows a shot isn’t coming from (at least not a dangerous one anyway).

As @Menzinger said, stack the top unit, Rielly to PP2.

I feel the same way that Marner and Rielly are not complimentary, but I moved Marner to PP2. I value Rielly's contribution more. I put Spezza on the other point. Spezza is a good passer with a good shot that has good aim and seldom goes high and wide and out of the zone.

In: Nylander, Foligno, Brodie
Out: Anyone Old, Rielly.
I like Brodie. Was a very good signing. But I would prefer Muzzin or Holl, only because then we would have someone on the point who could actually take a slapshot. It might force one of the PKers to actually go out to defend the shot. Naturally I would prefer that dman to be a better skater, but beggars can’t be choosers.

Loading it up is possibly the worst idea. There's already way too much stupid passing, and I'm never against passing, just stupid passing. We need more guys that don't want to be cute with the puck and want to move the puck quickly. That's how PPs work, you have the man advantage, so someone is open if you move the puck quickly. The last thing we need is more stick handling and cutesy plays. Besides Nylander really is only a scoring threat in front of the net, his long range shot is very overrated.

The Leaf's power-play hasn't changed, it's how opposing teams have observed what they do and are reacting accordingly. And as they see what other teams have done, other's are also copying it. So the issue is, the Leaf's power-play needs to change. As many have observed, the Leaf's points are getting no respect.

I would go with:
Nylander Tavares Marner
Rielly Matthews

I'd have Marner jump to the point if Rielly or Matthews sneaks in. The Oiler's top unit plays about an entire minute of PP time over the Leaf's top forwards. Wouldn't hesitate to give these guys all the ice one could, only using the 2nd unit if the guys on the first are gassed.

Does anyone know if Malhotra has previously been in charge of a team’s PP? I remember him being known more for his defensive acumen than his offence.
Also, if the players are more to blame, then it’s time to take away their PP time and give it to someone more deserving.
