Part of the "issue" is that you're right that it's not a particularly appealing job. Twitter and reddit go crazy over getting a big name coach but frankly those coaches rarely take international jobs, and if they do, it's going to be for their home country or for one of the higher ranked teams.

I really don't see the job attracting someone with a reputation higher than GGG, so if you're going for improvement, it's going to come from someone unexpected. For the record, I would have no problem bringing GGG back.

To your point about names... I don't have any, because frankly, if you have prestigious coaching aspirations, this job probably isn't for you. I don't want Marsch though because he is the definition of a system coach and it's a system that I think would fail at the international level, especially at our talent level. The only time Marsch has had success is when the talent level of his team exceeds the opposition. It's a high intensity system that (IMO) would struggle when you continuously have 2 or 3 games in a small window. Given the limited time and cohesion I also think it's easier to start with a solid defensive structure and figure out the offensive side later, which is probably why I don't mind GGG.

Yeah, I think thats the issue that I have with the USMNT coaching search is that they need someone that can get them to the next level to make it an attractive prospect for someone else. a coaching "hype man" if you will. When i read the report of them approaching Zidane, I nearly cried in laughter. I think theres enough talent on the MNT team contend for trophies, though i dont think theres enoguh to be considered favorites. With the right coach, that might change, but you have to put someone in place that can make it seem like a more attractive place to be first. And obviously, you have to give them a pool of talent to work with. Its definitely gotten better, but its still a long way off there, as well.

I thought that for the most part, GGG did a decent enough job in his time. some of the qualifying matches were frustrating, the lineup choices weren't always remotely defensible, and the Reyna situation was a nightmare (though i do believe Reyna isnt innocent here either). Im not sure he could have done much better - except for a better group stage result - at the world cup. Beating the Netherlands would have been nice, but realistically, they weren't going to advance past that without a miracle. Even if they won their group, they maybe beat Senegal (who looked lost), and then they get absolutely destroyed by France. He took that team about as far as the talent he had could take him, and there's no shame in that. Give him another few years with this group and see if they learned anything vs constantly tearing it down in between every WC would be my approach.

@Appleyard as someone who is closer to it - whats really going on with the City allegations? I cant imagine the repercussions will be franchise altering (like relegation) but im curious what the general feeling is as someone who understands the team but can also be objective?

A lot of them will come to basically nothing. The stuff about not sending accounts from 2018, the youth player stuff will likely wash over I think, same with some of the other "smaller" financial things.

But the two for me that will be the crux are...

The Mancini stuff (and players over that timespan with secret payments). If he did not actually fulfil the bullshit "obligations" to coach over in the Middle East for a few days then that one is clear cut. Same if they find that players had other payments to top up their wages.

The falsely inflated sponsorship deals. If that can be proven then that is a serious breach.

Tbh even if they were relegated I dont think it would be toooo big a deal long term. Happened to Juventus and would still get like 40,000+ fans a game and be up in a year.
But would be a big black mark... and this is not Italy where kind of expected and Juventus just really recovered/did not lose reputation as Italy is so used to corruption aha.

Yeah, I mean City have enough money to get back to promotion quickly, so I don't think it would ruin them long term. I probably worded that poorly last night. I guess its really just a matter of who would potentially leave - be it because they don't want to play in Championship, or because their wages are tied to PL/CL football, dependent on contract structure (maybe this is subsided with 1 year loans for some people?) - or is there really no effect and we just see a PL Contender just toying with a bunch of lower level players for a year.

I do wonder how the black stain would effect them. City is too big of a job to not take for most, but does it have a short (or long?) term effect on some players and managers wanting to be there? I think Pep said he would leave, and he's arrogant enough that I think he might, but I imagine there'd still be plenty of people lining up to take the position if he does.

I guess that guys like:

Foden, Palmer, Lewis

would for sure stay. Maybe a few more first team guys who really love the city and want to stay.

Then tbh I think they could still be comfortably promoted just using the u-23 team guys. As most are u-21 internationals or on loan at other Prem/Championship clubs anyway.

Pep would 100% leave. I think the guy is pretty principled and would not want to be involved if properly proven.

Obviously this is pretty fresh, but is there a 'feeling' one way or another that this may go? I know there isnt a lot of information out yet, but curious if theres a "this is garbage and all unfounded" or a "crap, this could be a problem" similar to how when Chelsea got their ban a few years back.

Oh, they for sure have been fiddling accounts. Most clubs have since FFP came in... that is part of the reason transfer fees have inflated so much!

It will result in something, I think most likely maybe a transfer ban for a year or maybe a point deduction to start a season.
