Soccer / Football Thread Part Seven

  • We sincerely apologize for the extended downtime. Our hosting provider, XenForo Cloud, encountered a major issue with their backup system, which unfortunately resulted in the loss of some critical data from the past year.

    What This Means for You:

    • If you created an account after March 2024, it no longer exists. You will need to sign up again to access the forum.
    • If you registered before March 2024 but changed your email, username, or password in the past year, those changes were lost. You’ll need to update your account details manually once you're logged in.
    • Threads and posts created within the last year have been restored.
    • Our 2025 light and dark themes were lost, so we are rebuilding them. Light theme is currently available, but work in progress

Our team is working with Xenforo Cloud to recover data using backups, sitemaps, and other available resources. We know this is frustrating, and we deeply regret the impact on our community. We are taking steps with Xenforo Cloud to ensure this never happens again. This is work in progress. Thank you for your patience and support as we work through this.

Liverpool will be the most unconvincing Premier League winner in recent memory. They have nothing if the other team manages to shut Salah down.

that's why i've been concerned all year about them not really going out and signing anyone..and then they are still playing with fire by not re-signing him, VVD, and Trent to new contracts

Yeah, the Salah situation seems a bit odd. He's not getting younger, but he's still pretty much irreplaceable. Is it just negotiating tactics to get him on a cheaper deal? Pretty risky if so.

there's been rumors on the LP reddit that says that Salah and VVD are more or less done..but if true what's the hold up on announcing..TAA is gone, i am pretty sure..and we do not have any "stars" that can carry the team

Well Leicester happened less than 10 years ago... Slot has overplayed them too much. Not the same team as the 1st half.

I'm sure Liverpool won't lose all three on a free, but it's looking more and more likely that Salah is going to leave. He's won everything with Liverpool and they won't be the same team next year. He should go and make his Saudi billions whilst he can.

Meanwhile, for Forest it's looking more and more likely by the game. The Champions League was just a funny possibility but we're now 7 points clear of sixth with the best remaining fixtures in the league. This just might happen.

They gambled big time, but it actually worked. Sadly, this seems to be the only way for promoted clubs to avoid going down again these days.
9 games to go and the 3 promoted clubs are basically all relegated. That's just ridiculous. And I can't see it being much different next season either.

We're only two years removed from all three clubs staying up. You have to invest for sure when you get promoted, but you have to do it intelligently. Forest bought youth and experience and it's paying dividends and our current starting XI "only" cost us something in the region of £140m. That has to be one of the lowest in the league.

Burnley and Ipswich have come up since and signed a lot of players but very little actual PL experience along with it - and it's been obvious to see.

I think it's getting harder and harder for promoted clubs though. When I look at the current top 17 in the Premier League, I'm not sure I see one club I expect to struggle enough to face relegation next season. Even Wolves who are having a bad season I can see rebound next year with players like Cunha in their squad.

I mean one reason ManUtd and Tottenham are in midtable now is because the midtable clubs keep improving and keep building better squads with years of TV money. It's getting virtually impossible to catch up with that in one transfer window unless you spend like Forest did which is a huge risk.
Wouldn't Forest have been in big financiel trouble if they got relegated in their first season?

Probably not. You get huge parachute payments and we had a lot of very re-sellable players. We'd have had to cut costs of course, but we didn't *actually* spend as much as people made out. Ipswich this season and Burnley last season spent as much, if not more.

Yeah, I guess Forest just spent smarter. Brought in some players from Europe instead of buying the best players from the Championship which most promoted clubs seem to do.
And then they got MGW, of course. Many people scratched their heads when Forest paid 50 million or so for him, but he was well worth it. I've been a fan of him since his time at Sheffield United. Even though ironically he was one of the players who missed a penalty against Forest in the playoffs.

Yes, the whole process was unusual. We signed the player who missed the penalty in the semi-final, and then signed the two players who had good penalty shouts against us in the final too. Funny how things turn out.

The dipshit doesn’t start Reyna, at worst their 2nd best/most important player and MVP of last years tournament, then says he was waiting for extra time to sub him in. But don’t worry, he says he’ll play in the 3rd place game!

Cool.

If you're referring to Poch, you should get used to aggravating player selections.

In fairness, he's playing with house money in these games, so it may be about finding out who he can or can't trust later on.

But he doesn't really get the benefit if the doubt from me.
If you can’t make the easy decisions there’s no chance you can make the hard ones. So far he’s failing at every turn and it’s not going to get better when things get harder.

They’ve won this tournament three years in a row for a reason. Not even making it to the finals is a joke, especially given the fashion in which they failed and the insane choices he made. Even if you’d argue that this game doesn’t really matter and can be used to evaluate, he was definitely trying to win the last one and failed horribly.
