“People” don’t define it as such. It’s literally the definition.

The Cambridge definition is “interesting to, aimed at, or affecting only a small number of people.” It even gives a highly relevant example of usage. “MMA is no longer a niche sport”

When viewed relative to the 3 bigger leagues, sure. It’s smaller. But that it really the only context where the NHL can be viewed that way. In any other context, it’s a huge business. Like I said, thinking of it this way is only the result of a weird inferiority complex hockey fans have about it.

The definition of niche in a marketing context is more about carving your space within the industry. Being niche does not mean you can't find a space worth billions.... it's a big space.

The nhl is a specialized product that caters and relied on certain demographics more heavily than sports like football and basketball. It has certain challenges in terms of participation, exposure and growth that are difficult to overcome relative to other major sports. It's inherent hurdles makes it a niche offering.

hockey is too fast for the average American, they cant keep their eyes on the puck. another reason why they used to have Red lines for slap shots and blue for passes
This is dumb. There are more hockey fans in the US than people in Canada.

I love how Canada gets like one preliminary game and people play it off as though they are an equal partner in the hosting rights with the US and Mexico
I love how how this isn’t even close to accurate
Mexico and Canada play the same, US with majority of games.

This is dumb. There are more hockey fans in the US than people in Canada.

Yet only a fraction of the viewers.
Who would of guessed 1 in 3 Americans are fans.

what are the population differences? truth is majority of Southern States have zero interest.
Ive heard complaining about how fast the game is for Americans I've spoken through comment sections on hockey articles so maybe I just thought it was more than it really is

This thread started nearly 18 years ago 😮
And MLS went from 12 teams to 29 with #30 coming next year meanwhile the NHL went from 30 to 32 and finally got out of Phoenix after a quarter century. The NFL, MLB, and NBA have done nothing outside of a couple of relocations and name changes.

Expansion fee for the MLS went from 10 million to half a billion dollars.

So you took a strawman based on internet comments & then projected. Did you ever even talk to an American hockey fan? As I pointed out, there’s a ton more US hockey fans than Canada has people.

And yet US teams drive the league despite your ignorance

And soccer is still just as lame and boring ;)
How true

Those numbers aren't an accurate reflection of popularity. There's no way hockey fans make up 1/3 of the population.
Furthermore in no universe is (American) Football only 38% more popular than hockey.

okay now look at the population differences.... Yes Ive spoken to American's and what's the difference between a forum or the comment section on hockey articles? still doesn't change the fact that majority of the southern states could give a shit about hockey and Ive spoken to people who are from the US and they have gone on about how it's too fast and they have a hard time tracking the puck, maybe I assumed more Americans were the same way.... big deal

Just being obtuse.Poster ignored your population comment each time. It’s not even close to which country hockey is more popular.
Canada would win in a poll obviously.

Yea I'd love to know where they got their numbers. There is no chance there are that many people in the US who identify as hockey fans, never mind the fact that football is by far the most popular sport in the country and its defiantly hire than 188 million. Or I should say hockeys much lower than the number they gave them.

Sports fans have a tendency to believe that sports are far more popular than they actually are. Estimates for last year's Super Bowl are around 120 million viewers.

They also tend to believe there's less overlap between sports fans than there is. I don't know any one-sport fans.

for sure more popular in Canada and obviously he ignored it lol, wouldn't help his argument much. but yeah we got 40m+ and USA has 335m. still doesn't change the fact that majority of the Southern States dont care about hockey though. didnt need to say any of this anyways I know ur not arguing with me

I only really like hockey, I don't really enjoy any other sports.

MLB - is fun when playing fantasy like switching from game to game when ur batters are up

NFL - I can sleep to, I just find it so incredibly boring, great action sure but the play stops every other second

NBA - dont really find anything interesting about it in the slightest

FIFA or Soccer - highlights are fun but it's so boring to watch

Lacrosse - the only other sport I enjoy, as close to hockey as it gets. fun to go to the games
