I see the trolls have been busy tonight haha. It's amusing that the same people who complained about "running up the score" yesterday are the ones ripping up Canada for only winning by two today.
First it's "You won too much!", then "You didnt win by enough!". Hilarity.

In all seriousness though, credit to the Slovaks. They played an incredibly tight-checking game and definitely outmatched us in intensity.
As for Canada, I actually liked a lot about our game today. The effort could have been better, especially on the forecheck, but with back-to-back games after so much time off, with a 6.5 spread... it's not hard to understand.

Canada still won which is all that matters, Slovakia just put on a hell of a clinic like they haven't since 2015. It's good they had a close game to tighten some question marks for more consequential games. You never, ever want to sleepwalk through the round robin running up the score only to catch a hot team in the QFs or Semis, it's a recipe for no medals.

Every team barring Sweden, who's missing a few players that is bound to catch up with them eventually as a problem, has had question marks. If Canada posted 3-1 with an ENG over a 60% German squad I'd be seriously worried, but it's game two after delivering a massive shellacking against a non-joke opponent. This team is fine.

Congrats for the Slovaks for playing a great game, and making Canada sweat.

Fans of Team Canada, let's keep in mind, that these kids haven't played for the most part, since last March. This will have been their second game, in two nights... the only two games they will have played in ten months.... You aren't going to get perfection under these circumstances.

Seemed like Canada was going through the motions today. A lot of players were invisible.

Perfetti, Pelletier, Tomasino and Newhook were all good I thought. Cozens and McMichael were decent too but just couldn’t cash. Mostly everyone else was invisible and Mercer took a dumb penalty.

What’s Byfield’s deal? He’s the same age now Laf was last year when he was dominating this tournament. Hoping Byfield starts to pick it up.

Canada will be fine. This adversity was good, but they need to pick it up.

It isn't rocket science, you have an opportunity to tune up your team or to collect inflated goal stats.

They picked inflated stats and tonight they paid for their ignorant behavior.

Thanks for the laugh, man. I haven’t seen something this ridiculous since bell-bottom pants were in style.

Congrats Canada.

Slovakia played well, definitely had the momentum on their side when they gave away the puck to Canada for 2-0
Sealed the deal.

haven't been too crazy from what I've seen of Finland so far, I only see those 3 players and nothing else.

that's not good news.
Canada don t impress me too. Vs Slovaks(Similar strengh like SUI) very poor. The Finns were vs Swiss much better.

2-1 for Canada, 3-1 if you count EN goals as goals:)

As a Canadian hockey fan I'm embarrassed that they would pile it on with that empty net goal. They should have taken their foot off the pedal at 2-1 and been happy. Classless punks with zero sportsmanship. Plus I heard one of them called his opponent a "doodyhead". There's no excuse for this type of behavior.

Lets face it...Canada can't impress anyone until they get their gold medals. And even then they're ridiculed by some.

They smoke Germany and they're too hot, they win a close one with Slovakia and they're too cold. Tell us Goldilocks, what score is just right?

The story of team Canada, by Alanis. Always too hot, never too cold. Take your best shot - too hot to hold. Never too young, never too old.. Ya gotta go for goooold.

No, Finland is more likely to be mocked, even though they have won as much gold as Canada in the last 10 years. Sorry, why are you taking the game against Germany as a benchmark? Because of Corona, they had a decimated squad and no preparation. Then why do you cheer like that? That's almost unsportsmanlike.

What are you even talking about? You're complaining that they "padded their stats" against germany (spoiler: they didnt)? But then you're saying they should have also padded their stats against Slovakia? Do you realize how stupid your argument is?

Who's taking the game against Germany as a benchmark? They were undermanned and their goaltending was deplorable. How is that Team Canadas fault?

And who cheered like what? I barely watched it, that's how riveted I was to a game against a lesser opponent without a full team.

I have no idea why you guys are making such a big deal about the result that everyone expected.

You realize tha the groups are entirely based in the previous year's results right? Like every year, lol. Luck has nothing to do with it. Canada won the right to an easier group 12 months ago.
A weaker group isn't always a benefit.

For starters, playing more weaker teams in the group doesn't prepare your team for tougher matchups in the elimination round.

Secondly, teams from the weaker group also cross over with the stronger group for QF matchups which is often less favourable than the matchup the stronger group teams matchup with.

For example, the top 2 in Group A (likely Canada and Finland) matchup against the 3rd or 4th in Group B, which will be two of Sweden/Russia/USA/Czech Republic. Whereas the top 2 in Group B will get easier matchups, likely against 2 of Germany/Switzerland/Slovakia.

Obviously there's a problem if you're in the stronger group and finish 3rd or 4th, but I'm sure a team like Sweden would fancy their chances of finishing top 2. And even if they don't finish top 2, they'd still have the benefit of getting battle-hardened in tough games against Russia/USA/Czech, as compared to the relative coastings their QF opponents would have faced for most of the group stage.
