I also think Nashville wanted to trade him to a team on a different timeline than them. They knew SJ wasn't going to be competitive for a while and perhaps they knew that Askarov is probably ready now or close to now to be a regular NHL goalie.

Nashville made several blunders this offseason. Trading a potential top tier goalie for a late first in a poor draft and a center prospect that looks like a 3C was wrong.
Hitching your team to a goalie about to turn 30 who’s never won a playoff series was a play for sure.
Team would’ve been better re-signing Lankinen, keeping Askarov and moving Saros to a contender who had some pieces to send back.
I don’t think Trotz wanted to deal with the potential headache of Askarov. And I say this with all due respect as I love ZLH as a player, Trotz is willing to deal with any shenanigans that this kid may present but not for Asky was silly as Asky has the sky is the limit potential.
Askarov is very special, but Saros has averaged 4th place in Vezina voting the last 5 years and Askarov had played like 6 periods of hockey and asked to be traded. Trotz has messed up a lot but getting a 1st and a recent 1st wasn't the worst move he made.

Don’t care about Vezina voting. The goal is to win Cups. He’s never won a playoff series. Could’ve gotten more for Saros and a dominant goalie for the next 10-15 years.

I couldn't be a bigger believer in Askarov. The Sharks made a generation changing move when they picked him up. Can't wait to see how far he takes that team in the future.
I won't pretend to have seen this NSH breakdown coming. I didn't. But I do know I wouldn't have let Askarov go.

Well neither have Askarov, but we still have two time stanley cup champion Luke Schenn
Guessing Nash uses one of the TB/LV first or their own second to draft a goalie this draft and kick it down the road 4-5 more years. They made their choice when they signed Saros. Figured, they would have had Askarov compete with Wedgewood for the backup job in camp.

While I'm not a believer in playoff Saros at all this also isn't a fair bar. There's only really been one playoff series we should have been expected to have a shot at winning (Yotes during the pandemic season) during his tenure. Should a goalie of his purported caliber be able to have stolen another of those series? Sure, worse goalies do all the time, but I don't think it's a (fair) black mark he hasn't managed to yet. Put him on that Avs or Knights team and he probably has a ring.
All that aside, I wish we had traded him and kept Askarov.

I think most Preds fans were ok with trading Askarov, given he wanted out, given we had hitched our wagon to Saros long term, and given the expectations were that the Preds would at least be a playoff team this season and would try to work towards contention in the next few seasons.
Some of us weren't so happy about hitching our wagon to Saros via the specific contract he received, but anyway, once it was fait accompli, it certainly made it understandable how quickly the team accommodated Askarov's trade request.
However, now that the team is performing so poorly, and with such a veteran-laden roster, it certainly looks like the other fundamental premise in terms of expecting the team to be competitive this season and for the forseeable future was a terrible one, and that's the thing that throws the goaltending moves back into major question. I'd trade Saros for Askarov today, that's for sure. Easy decision where we're sitting today. So needless to say, the sequence of goalie moves the team made is looking even more like a huge mistake than ever.

I understand the offseason moves because of the deal we made to Saros. I also understand the deal we made to Saros. In hindsight it doesn't seem like they were the right moves, but I still understand why those decisions were made.

While I was somewhat excited about the FA signings, as time wore on, I was skeptical at best what would happen. I was not a proponent of our team counting on a core of players into their thirties leading the playoff and Cup charge. If we had really good pieces in place and they were supplementing the roster, great. To be the core, bad decision.
To double down on re-signing Saros with your core in their 30’s was asinine. Then to trade away the goalie of your future for an average return at best.
One bad move after another.
I was thinking of teams like Montreal, Philadelphia or maybe Chicago. But yes, contender teams with a tight salary cap could also be considered given Askarov's cheap contract.

I remember Devils fans getting stick from everyone for saying what a good return SJS got for Meier. Zetterlund and Shak doing well + Musty looks promising. Grier is doing fine work

I will say the Devil fans’ reaction was a good part of my optimism toward the trade. Zetterlund has become a core part of our team and Muhk is finally in the NHL and slowly getting better. I think Musty is either going to be a big part of our future or a big part of a trade that sends us *hopefully* a high-end defenseman so yeah, overall, really happy with that deal.
Honestly, Grier has been really fantastic.
Another dominant win for him. He's now at a .925 save percentage in 7 games, 6 against playoff teams.

Askarov has some personality, that "it factor". Had a fight in the A, some fun celebrations, all tatted up...guy has the image and charisma. I loved his postgame interview after the Tampa win. Engaged the crowd, had a smile on his face and just seems ready to embrace the role as a true #1. He'll go on to have a special career by the looks of it, he definitely gained me as a fan.

I hated the move then. I hate it more today. Define good center prospect because I don't consider a guy who might turn into a 3C a good center prospect. High end of this guy is slim at turning into a 2C. To me, that's not good enough for a goalie who's high end is elite and should turn into a top 10 goalie. Add to that a late 1st round pick in a poor draft and I'm like, you turned an 11OA pick into a 3C who probably won't see the NHL for 3-4 years, a late 1st round pick who at best sees the NHL in 4-5 years and Chrona.
The more I think about it and post about it the more annoyed I get.
Tanking. We have a top 3 pick plus 2 more 1sts and 2 2nds this year. We have about 8 recent 1sts looking to break through. Hopefully he'll fire Brunette after we get our top pick and come away with a Hagens.
