Too bad Todd McLellan is our coach.

I can see Todd right now calling up DW going "Hey Dougie, thanks man! Is Hannen going to make it for tonight's game? I can't wait to get him out there!" "No Todd, he won't and I only made that trade to have a guy for an emergency, you have better options" "Haha, yah, right, liek Demers? haha, seriously though, can I ice him tonight?"

Or this? I feel like this isn't such a bad pickup...maybe I'm giving it too much sentimental value.

Well. Hannan was the only sharks d-man ever to excel at the "playoff mugging" style of defense :P

Let's get Ragnarsson and Rathje out of retirement and make it a 2000 Sharks Defense Reunion!

Good trade. You can't get much cheaper than a conditional 7th.
Realize that he's only going to see ice time if TWO of our dressed 6 defensemen get injured because Tennyson is likely higher on the depth chart. Even then they might just convert Burns back to D instead of using Hannan if that happens.

It's always good to have a contingency plan in a worst-case scenario, and it came super cheap so why are people angry again?

Because he's worthless and we don't need him and have better choices no matter how many defensemen get injured.

i think dwil is starting to look at his roster and see that it is too old. he is clearing cap space for the future. He is going to hang on to marleau, thornton, boyle, etc until their contracts expire or if they can get trade value the year before they become UFAs. Sharks are "resetting" (aka rebuilding). these moves will not give us a long playoff run this year. it could prove fruitful next year if DWil utilizes his newly acquired assets correctly
