2 Burst pipes, (that we can) see from overnight (in Halifax NS), -26 degrees before windchill... living room and TV room. Won't know until we hit plus-temps if there's more damage under the floors. Full size split with the extra-foot bump out in front.... been here 26 years, this is the first issue like this we've had. Hot water baseboard, oil.
Oh man I’m so sorry, been there and done that. More than once too.

Let me guess outside wall right?

I know it’s too late now but for future reference when weather like this is coming raise your thermostat at least 5 degrees. Yes you’ll burn more oil but the room temperature will remain more or less the same as usual & if the room is normally closed off open it up. This is what I do and it has worked well.

Again I am so sorry I’ve been there and it sucks.

Always make sure the monitor arm with a clamp you buy for your desk actually fits. Due to my stupidity, I now need a new computer monitor after mine fell onto the desk.

Thank god for the 4 year replacement plan I got. Hoping Best Buy just lets me grab the new monitor and just exchange them and let me buy a new plan.

I was pissed last night but I found a desk top stand that will raise my monitor and give me back valuable desk space. Now I can only laugh.

Looks like we didn’t escape the cold after all.

Yesterday I flushed the toilet on our first floor and noticed the TP didn’t go down. Then I saw water seeping out of the bottom of the toilet.

My theory was a pipe partially froze and when it flushed it had nowhere to go. A plumber friend said that’s likely what happened. So we’re waiting to see how it does as it warms up today. No water in the basement or ceiling so far.

What a joy.

Mods, feel free to delete if not allowed.

If anyone is interested in a $20 Super Bowl square to benefit the memorial scholarship fund that I run for my friend who passed in 2011, please PM me and I’ll provide the Venmo link.

Payout is $200 per quarter with the remaining $1,200 going to the scholarship.

Only rule is that you cannot donate your winnings back.

If you win, you keep the prize!

This will benefit a deserving Lawrence High School senior.

Last year we gave out $2,000 but we hope to do more this year!

Thanks!

Oh, it sucks. But such is life. (Reports all over the province of broken pipes).
The problem is we JUST had a heat pump installed a week ago, and so, expecting the big drop we cranked both the oil heat, the heat pump and any available heaters we had. The heat pump gave false reading to the thermostats controlling the oil heat, and so they cycled way less.... live and learn for sure. The heat pump comes with a costly learning curve.
The pipes that froze are perched inside a bump out, and with the added wind chill (-47 degrees).... the rest was history.
No big deal, worse things than that in daily life these days... thanks though.

Best Buy's plan doesn't cover cracked screens :/ I ended up with an Acer curved monitor. I had a 27 inch and this is 31.5" which is going to take some adjusting to. I already love it and can't wait for my riser to come tomorrow so I can get it up off my desk and more ergonomic.

I gained back about a foot of desk space by getting rid of the monitor stand with drawers I was using which is what caused the whole monitor fiasco. I can't believe it takes hours to clean and reorganize a desk.

Wow, what happened there?
Engine failure and apparently another type of "known problem" in this model Tucson.

Grateful it didn't catch fire in the garage (he was 6 miles away from home) and grateful for insurance.

We brought home a new 2018 ride last night which is safe, economical, and not on fire.

(Note the BROONS license plate--we plan to save it)

Engine failure caused a fire. Just speculating, but that engine model has a history of failing connector rod bearings, so my guess is, the bearing failed, engine threw a rod, rupture the engine block and hot oil on the block caught fire. Good news is, it saved having to replace the engine and then still have a 7 year old car. Insurance was very good on the total loss settlement (I love USAA!), and we got a new-to-us car yesterday.

I hate dementia with EVERY FIBER OF MY BEING.

And some fibers I don't have.

First you lose them mentally, and then you have all the physical issues. It's like dying twice. And not a thing you can do about it.
Sending hugs.

It is brutal. My father passed away early this morning but it is a relief at this point. He stopped eating and drinking, it is inhumane to let something die that way but there was no choice. My nephew tried to feed him yesterday and he refused. He drifted in and out of consciousness most of the visit and when my nephew said he had to go home, my Dad opened his eyes, grabbed his arms and said "dead". He was ready.

RIP Dad

This is her downstairs, and me upstairs (after switching over the insurance). Pretty much like every day - might see her in the "break room" once in a while.

Hey Caz. Went thru a similar situation just before the holidays. I wish you the best in your mourning and resolve to move forward. Since the beginning of time there have been starts and stops to this part of the journey and everyone that has come before has gone thru that and it's not how much time you have, but how much you can do with your time. Easy to say for sure, but I hope your father was able to touch people and make things better for those around him as a legacy - can't ask for much more than that in the end. Take care.

Since the toilet pipe is typically 3" , plastic and doesn't hold water in it (unless its sloped wrong) it is way more likely to be a clog

My son clogged ours last year by trying to flush dude wipes which I specifically said NOT to do. It got caught on a pipe joint. Had to have the plumber come and drain the pipe.....yes it spilled in the basement....made my son clean it up.

Son was like well the package says safe for septic systems....I said what do you expect them to say?

Well apparently there was a stink *see what I did there* and then one day he texts me a picture of the package....now on it it says DO NOT FLUSH

Gee....Dad was right AGAIN

We’ve had clogs before (obviously, happens to everyone) but never seen water seep out the bottom only back up in the bowl.

Plus this is a strictly #1 toilet…unless in an emergency situation

Either way, it’s fixed now!
