Great on-ice IQ, not so great self preservation IQ. Dude gets injured...a lot.
Honestly I think he just needs to put on some weight. When you're so long, all force experts a huge torque. You need the requisite mass to resist that and Edvinsson is still too you g to have his grown man strength. I just hope that he doesn't pick up anything that could turn into a chronic issue before he's strong enough to fend off injuries

Plus what's he supposed to do to avoid things like that Risto hit? One of the few guys in the league as tall as Ed came at him with a flying elbow. There's not much you can do to protect yourself from that besides make everyone understand the consequences of going head hunting. Between our ineffective DPS and the Wings refusal to stand up for their teammates, right now, there are no consequences. Someone needs to go full McCarty on Risto so that other teams know not to head hunt our kids. It's time for Rasmussen to earn his spot in the lineup I think

Chip the puck and don't stand up like a Redwood. Chip the puck and brace yourself, bend slightly for impact and spin away to start rotating. Or give them the old Gordie Howe and lead with your elbow, higher and harder (mostly joking).

The DPS is a huge farce, that's for sure.

Risto came from his blind side while Ed was collecting the puck. He had literally no time after the chip to properly defend himself. If he had bent down, he'd have been putting his head in more danger of getting elbowed. It would have been the better way to brace for a shoulder check, but made the elbow we saw even worse.

If he turns to the wall, he loses his lane to stay in the play and possibly gets boarded anyway- preferable knowing that Risto was going for a cheap shot, but Ed can't know that ahead of time. That's the problem with side swiping guys with a high elbow. As a player, the Gordie Howe reverse elbow is pretty much the only thing you can do to protect yourself. Of course, that's illegal so we have to rely on DPS, the code and consequential violence to discourage it.

The proper hockey play from Risto there is to go shoulder to shoulder. You can't always expect guys to do that, but he had to go out of his way to catch Ed's head. There's really not much you can do there except have some guy on your team that lets the league know "you head hunt my young teammate and it's open season." We should make Ras train with that MMA guy everyone goes to for workouts. If I was on the team, I'd be hip checking Risto in the knees to create a maximum speed head first rotation straight at the ice.

Who are your top 5 rookies?
Stankoven, Michov, Celebrini, Dustin Wolf, Lane Hutson.

In no particular order, Edvinsson and Tsyplakov belong in this conversation too. It's a relatively 'tight' bunch right now imo. I guess instead of he's not top five I should of said there are about 7 guys bunched up who could win the Calder, idk if anyone is 'clear-cut'.

Agree with all except negative 500 Hutson.

Honestly if opponents are taking hard runs at guys, especially younger players, I'm fully in favor of the elbows out approach.

I'm not saying go full-Trouba on a guy for a routine hit, but when a team is "finishing their checks" hard, meaning taking runs at guys long after the puck is gone in a way the NHL still allows, get that elbow up and out. Zetterberg would to it at times early in his career.

Totally worth the potential penalty and fine.

I think Ristolainen put his shoulder into Edvinsson's chin, which I'm not happy about, but that hit was not from his blindside.

Happens all the time in the playoffs when the refs put the whistle away. Of course that's not an issue for the Wings for now...

This kid has been great so far this season. He does some small mistakes, but he has been great. If he can keep it up all season long, and Seider, we are making playoffs.

I am very high on Simon. I agree on him needing a higher fitness level (not necessarily muscle). He may want to spend the off season with Mo.

My consistent comment is on puck retrieval. Far too often, he doesn't rush to the puck. Rather he looks to time his arrival with the opponent, thinking he can out leverage/hit them. The impacts where him down and impact his control and movement of the puck.
