1. Gretzky
2. Lemieux
3. Orr
4. Howe
5. Crosby

Was always hard to argue against the top 4, but now I'd say it's getting hard to argue against this top 5

He is 5th, people love to freak out and say "no no no he can't be top 5!" But fail to actually argue the point. Who can you argue over Crosby at #5?

Crosby is definitely going to go down as a top 5 player of all time. Too many people are stuck in the past so they have a hard time accepting that a current player is good enough to be better than many of the greats of the past.

are all still solidly above him.

He might slide into that 5 slot, but it's not clear cut. He's competing with guys like Hull, Beliveau, Richard, Harvey, Shore, etc.

Wtf messier?

Wiki:

Messier is considered one of the greatest NHL players of all time.[2] He is second on the all-time career lists for playoff points (295) and regular season games played (1756), and is third for regular season points (1887). He is a six-time Stanley Cup champion—five with the Oilers and one with the Rangers—and is the only player to captain two different professional teams to championships.

Seriously you guys heard of Sakic, Yzerman, Rocket Richard, Esposito the list is long Crosby is not even in top ten not even close. Crosby wins sure but he does not dominate like others have before and won also. Just because he's one of the best now doesn't make him an all time great.

He passed those guys. This is a 31 team league now. His entire body of work is far more impressive.

I'd be curious as to what you think Sakic and Yzerman did to earn a spot above Crosby on the all-time list.
