While I agree with the fiscal logic there is also the added pressure of winning that the media and fans put on the team.
At what point does it become a need to happen event? Will another fist round loss crate a cascade that wipes management out from the top down?
I mean if you bring in a proven coach like Trotz and still get knocked out in the first, optically speaking at least you tried something, otherwise you're in Einstein's definition of insanity.
Of course if Trotz doesn't want to coach this year, it would be prudent to stand pat and make the push for him next year for the reasons you've stated.
A smart coach like Trotz would want long-term security at the GM position his boss and both Dubas and Keefe are walking on eggshells with the level of failure they have delivered. and we might see a whole house cleaning event next summer without concrete results this year.

Coach and GM have to be on the same page in team building and style and work together hand in hand, and from the post-mortem season examination press conference Trotz can see Dubas and Keefe are thick as thieves tied together. Besides Leafs don't even have a stable reliable goalie under contract next year and Trotz is a defense first coach.

From PC ...

Asked Tuesday whether he’s considered what the impact could be of adding a veteran coach like Barry Trotz or Pete DeBoer — both of whom were relieved of their duties by their former NHL clubs this month — Dubas said he hasn't considered moving on from Keefe for a more veteran voice.

“It hasn’t crossed my mind, and I think my reason for that is my belief in Sheldon and the job that he’s done here so far,” the GM said.

“But also, that I only think Sheldon’s going to get better. I think when we speak of Sheldon 10, 15 years from now, it’ll be in the same way that you spoke of those two great coaches . And I think that’ll be played out here in Toronto.”

We will see how good he is when our team walks as free agents.

That last line makes me ill.

Loser mentality from top to bottom

Very disturbing quote. The idea is to improve at every position. Maybe one day Keefe will be better than Trotz but right now?
As for Trotz and the GM not finding chemistry, Trotz seemed to be good in waking and even the island
