Should Toronto trade their 1st and 2nd picks in the 2022 draft for rentals?

  • Yes! The goal is to win a championship and the Leafs should do everything to make that happen

  • No! You never know what will happen in the playoffs and you should always be looking to the future!

Being the first to call a big reversal in the stock market, makes bank, most of the time, and big.,...

So, this makes me no money again,...

But I perceive, almost no one is comfortable with how well we are playing right now, its making leafnation uncomfortable....

So many strange suggestions and threads...

I am going to say, I think Dubas might very well know more than most of us combined...

Enjoy the ride. Would be my best suggestion...

Whether you like Shanahan or not, the guy basically propped up this kid, ahead of two seeming legends and....

Well, best month of hockey I have seen from the Leafs ever....

And, I am very, very comfortable hanging with the best...

Enjoy peeps and stop with these weird suggestions...

NO! No more trading 1st round picks for players that never contribute.

Trade dead line rental trades at the cost of a 1st never work out.

lots of short-term memory going on up in this place

24 games in and we're talking about being real contenders, the best team in the league etc etc

there's still 3/4 of the season remaining and yet just like every other year here we are thinking this is gonna be the year lol

problem is everyone never looks at the bigger picture, they only look at the here and now. what were we all saying after the first 10 games of this season? yeah thats right....

and now after the next 14 games look at what everyone is saying...

so what happens when the next slump comes? 60 more games to go, we can bet there is another slump or two coming up.. and then what will we all be saying again...

the short-sightedness here is astounding

how many times have we been in this position of "this is the year" only to p*ss it all away in April... somehow this year is different though? haha right

wait it out... get a bigger sample size instead of claiming victory after just 24 games... but what the hell this is what happens in here every year lol

I think the intent of the OP was to test the will of us(forum dwellers) to trade more draft choices in pursuit of the Cup. If TO looks horrible prior to the TDL then I'd think our willingness to see the few draft choices TO has being traded would be significantly decreased but if TO continues to play well and looks like a true contender then utilizing the draft choices to make a contender even better can/should make sense.

Slumps come for all teams, even Cup winners, and Cup winners in spite of slumps attempt to improve their rosters. Opportunities to win the Cup are rare and teams that are content to be contenders are usually losers.

Last year was a proper year for TO to go for it all, they were mostly consistent with few if any true slumps, so far this year TO is again looking solid with some weaknesses but in a capped NHL that's life and that's maybe fixable by using the draft choices.

I prefer drafting and developing players over trading 1st and 2nds for magic beans.

Just seems the Leafs have no luck with deadline acquisitions

The draft picks are the magic beans because they may never play they get traded for proven talent

No.
1) Our playoffs success will mainly depend on whether or not the big 4 finally get it done anyway. Almost no matter who they play.
2) When you look at how well Dubas & Co. have drafted in recent years, you want more of the same. Also given our cap situation.

I'm shocked at the amount of people that are against moving our 1st and 2nd.

Why? because Foligno didn't work? I'm not going to tell you it worked because it very VERY did not work but this idea that it didn't work with Foligno so we can't trade the 2022 pick isn't just wrong it's downright stupid.

You don't know what's available if for example Chicago put Dominik Kubalik out there You're damn right that 1st round pick should be available because this team needs a top 6 winger.

If Philadelphia ever put Travis Konecy out there You're damn right that 1st round pick should be available because this team needs a top 6 winger.

If JT Miller is truly out You're damn right that 1st round pick should be available because this team needs a top 6 winger AND he's got term.

Now if you can add the final piece without moving the 1st round pick that's fine too, it's actually one of the reasons I'm not totally against the idea of Evander Kane because I don't think he he gets a 1st or top prospects because of the baggage.

If you can improve without hurting the farm system go for I have no issue adding 2 high end prospects with our 1st and 2nd picks.

But this idea that it didn't work with Foligno so this years shouldn't be available is stupid and needs to die.

This team tied for 1st overall in the league you should be looking to add the final piece

If we do trade our first and/or some of our top prospects it needs to be for guys with some term left and preferably with retention.

I don’t want us to do what we did last season and throw a bunch of picks after rentals but what Tampa did 2 years ago with Coleman and Goodrow.

Find guys with a year or 2 left on teams going into a rebuild and get their teams to retain on them.
We don’t need a huge name or a game breaker but a couple good players who complement what we already have.

Probably not. Don't have any glaring needs besides a top-6 LW and even that seems to have died down due to Bunting & Kerfoot looking great. If the right trade comes around, sure. If not, keep building a sustainable future team.

I reject the false dichotomy of that poll. Be open to the possibility of trading those pieces for the right addition but don't actively shop those pieces. For example, if some A level right side defender was available, you have to consider it.

I would only trade it for a player retained 50% with term.

For example, Yanni Gourde. Seattle doesn’t need cap. They need draft capital. We can have Gourde for 3 years at 2.5M.

Nope.

Imo they shouldn't be trading assets like that until they prove they can actually win a round. For 5 straight years we have used assets to improve this team going into the playoffs with no return. Let them figure it out on their own. This team needs to have a shot at good talent on elcs.

With the Cap situation and players coming back from injury there will be some moves that will add a few more picks for next year so they won't just have two picks to play with. They could also start moving 2023 picks.

I have no doubt they will move some picks if the team continues to trend as they are.
I also doubt they won't make at least a couple selections at the draft.

This is a premature poll. We don't know where the team will be at deadline (and as others have said, what's the return on these picks?). Impossible to answer.

Maybe a 2nd, no need to put a 1st on the table unless it’s a can’t miss trade. Leafs stars just need to earn their pay checks, and some timely saves by goalies

mainly leafs should grab a depth dmen
- guy that can bump holl down to 7th
Or
- guy that can be there in case of injuries

and a vet forward that brings leadership/grit , like a perry/maroon/cogliano etc … and will make plays when it matters

in a perfect world the ducks slump hard, getzlaf decides that he got 1000 games/points in duck uniform and wants to go for a cup and waived his NMC to go to Toronto. In that scenario I assume ducks trade him there for pretty little, to do him a favor

Just curious. How can you call trading for real players magic beans? But assume drafted players will make the NHL. Sounds like you have that backwards.

What did Dubas learn from trading 3 picks including his 1st last year leaving the Leafs with only 3 picks in the 2021 entry draft?

Would rather go back in forth on what we trade. So 2020 the team had 12 picks, it was fine to trade 2021 picks and not dip into the prospect pool. But since 2021 was light and 2022 is as well, this time around I'd rather trade prospect than picks. I'd have a hard time dealing Robertson, Amirov, Niemela and Knies though.
