Rumor: Should the CBJ pursue Elias Pettersson?

I'd like to see us pursue someone like, but not necessarily, Petterson. Go big game hunting while trying to keep as much of this current roster intact as possible.

I don't think the trades yesterday mean that Vancouver is done, but there's got to be tremendous pressure on them to win a few of these four games remaining before the break and get back into playoff position. If that locker room continues to clash and they don't have some immediate success, there is going to be a few weeks of stewing on who else has to go, and Pettersson will be front and center in those discussions.

This is not shocking. As CoachWithNoTeam said above, the next 4 games are key. It's not so much the results (but those are always important,) but how they look as a unit, and they are in the locker room. Even if they go 0-4, if they look functional and there is no drama, I doubt he is traded. But if they go 4-0 and they look like a disaster inside the locker room, he may get moved. It's not an easy stretch of games but 2-2 or 3-1 should be doable.

Feels more like an offseason type of trade at this point. If things don't turn around for Vancouver and he's available again around the draft, DW should make it happen if the price is right.
His NMC kicks in after this year so it's a pretty weird situation. At this point I think it's in season trade or maybe not at all.Hopefully in regards to us it's not at all

• The Blue Jackets kept popping up in Elias Pettersson rumors in recent weeks as the turbulent Vancouver Canucks shopped two of their top forwards, Pettersson and J.T. Miller. The Canucks traded Miller back to the New York Rangers on Friday, so Pettersson is likely staying put in Vancouver. But it’s worth noting the Blue Jackets were never seriously involved in trade talks for the 26-year-old Swede. Did Blue Jackets GM Don Waddell talk with his Vancouver counterpart, Jim Rutherford? Sure. But the Blue Jackets do not want to impede their young centers — 20-year-old Adam Fantilli, 21-year-old Cole Sillinger and, hopefully in the coming year or two, 18-year-old Cayden Lindstrom. Put another way: The Jackets are willing to add salary (Pettersson has an $11.6 million salary-cap hit), but there are better ways they can spend their money, and at other positions.

Again you'd think from Porty's reporting that Sillinger is a big time center in the making. Top six for sure, maybe pushing topline C some day. Is this just Porty or are people in the org that high on Sillinger?

Like I don't think there was a single one of us who said "I don't want us to acquire EP because that would block Cole Sillinger." We have an understanding where one of these guys is a top of the lineup type of player and the other is not.

I think Porty has always had much more of a bias toward grinders (i.e. Jenner, Dubinsky, Foligno, etc.) to my reading. I suspect that he lumps Cole in due to age (it is still wild that Cole is only 21), his playstyle, his willingness to speak on/off record, he may also have preference for his rollercoaster story which makes most Journalists weep with excitement.

I read it in a "the sum of the parts" sort of way, leading to the main point: "...there are better ways they can spend their money, and at other positions." Pretty reasonable take overall.

Are Sillinger's problems not correctable or something?

imo it's mostly spin but with a kernel of truth within.

seems like portzline has a good relationship with waddell so it's not surprising that he's towing the company line here so to speak. i doubt sillinger's presence has any bearing on whether or not the jackets pursue pettersson.

that said, it's clear that people in/around the game (scouts, coaches, FO types) are higher on sillinger than the fans are. wouldn't be shocked at all if FOs have a sam bennett or bo horvat type projection on him, and a high degree of certainty that he makes it there.

given his age, would not be at all surprised if his asset value at present was similar to a top-10-ish draft pick.

EP40's NMC kicks in the league new year, so if they're going to move him it'll likely have to be at the deadline or at the draft this summer.

for what it's worth, i think waddell underplayed his interest to portzline. doesn't serve the team's interests to have a "the jackets are pushing hard for EP40" narrative out there. loses them some leverage in negotiations if they were to re-engage.

on that note, still would not be at all surprised to see the canucks move pettersson at/before the deadline, and i still think columbus would/should be all over that.

I think he’s stated in many podcasts that the org sees Cole as 2nd line center .. he is only 21 and make pretty big strides this season . I think his article was also taking into consideration that Lindstrom becomes a viable option down the road as well . Also , Fantilli is well on his way to becoming that #1 center we drafted him as .
