Some free agent placeholders, be it bad ones is not a fireable offense to me. If we had a trash prospect pool and most were busts then that would get me leaning towards that.

Yzerman will never be fired tho, so it's moot.

Yeah, pretty easy call IMO. Early returns are a bit underwhelming but I think it makes sense to wait another year or two to see how their prospects look once graduated to the NHL.

That said, their pro scouting has been pretty bad... Is Steve Yzerman willing to fire Chris Yzerman?

Former Detroit Tigers GM Al Avila once traded his own son, might be time for Steve to give his bro the boot. Maybe wait until after the holidays though, could make for an awkward thanksgiving

Never seen a GM that most of the team's fans are still supporting that gets as much criticism from those who aren't Wings fans as Yzerman though, appreciate the concern for the Wings though lol

I actually misremembered that as Yzerman’s first draft, however it was Holland’s last one.

At any rate, I think I remember correctly that at the time, the 2018 first round where Zadina and Veleno fell from their projected draft positions were considered huge wins for the Red Wings.

6 years isn’t long in real terms. Nearly every good team in the NHL right now is built mostly on pre-2019 picks. The only way to say 6 years is long enough is to abandon any plan to build through the draft.

Yzerman’s first round picks have all looked great in the NHL so far and there is great depth and intriguing players in the prospect pool. Through trades he turned Mantha into Cossa, Bertuzzi into DeBrincat, and Hronek into Sandin-Pellikka. The depth player signings during the rebuild are leaving quite a bit to be desired right now, but the rebuild is clearly trending in the right direction. Lalonde needs to go, but zero reason Yzerman should be fired because the depth players he signed during the rebuild aren’t working out right now. I think it’s still a case of people misunderstanding how long it takes to fully rebuild a team with nearly zero talent on the roster or in the prospect pool.

I think he's still got some leash to run out, in that yes, he's made a lot of pretty terrible "veteran filler" signings...but ultimately, he's hit on all of his top picks that have come through, and the jury is still out as we wait on what the rest of his top picks will do. And he's made those "hit" picks without the ease of a just absolutely dead obvious "1st overall" type superstar. In the end, how the rest of those top picks turn out is what will determine the success or failure of the "Yzerplan". The rest is mostly just window dressing.

Even with the veterans it's sometimes hard to assess what value they may provide as mentors to younger players. At times you have guys that barely belong on the ice anymore but are absolutely vital in the room.

I’ll go with no. He hasn’t made any huge mistakes, drafted any big busts or made any obvious draft blunders. Granted he hasn’t done anything that jumps off the page positively, just very average.
