There has been a lot of discussion recently about whether or not Price should have his number retired. What do you think?
Yes, but after Koivu
Honoured maybe. Not retired.
I agree with Mr Ken Dryden.......YesThere has been a lot of discussion recently about whether or not Price should have his number retired. What do you think?
I get it. You look up at the rafters and there's a direct correlation between those retired numbers and the Cups they've won. But consider all the other retired names played with other retired names or Hall of Famers, which is why they won Cups. A lot of those guys weren't better players than Price, they just had the good fortune to play together on the same team. Price had Markov and Subban for a short time, both of whom were very good, but the rest of the roster was a revolving door of mid-tier talent. Patrick Roy's 1993 roster looks like an all-star team compared to Price's rosters from 2011 to 2021.Absolutely not.
As we enter a winning era, you'll see how miserable the previous one really was.
We will win a Cup or several and our goalie in each of those campaigns will look terrific, as they always do when they win the Cup. Several of our players will look phenomenal and make the "star" players of the drought eras look less good in comparison.
Price lost too many years to injury and a bad team ahead of him. He was a genuine superstar but that's not enough. Winning is a team sport and so is losing. He, Koivu, and Markov didn't win enough and when the generation of players comes around that does win, they'll shine brighter than the ones that did not.
To me it doesn't matter one bit to be the fattest hog on the farm if you're all covered in shit -- only winners should get their number retired.
No he doesn’t unfortunately. There are already too many retired jerseys at the club in my opinion. It should really be reserved for the best of the best. But regardless of that, he doesn’t have the one trophy that is the bare minimum for getting a number retired here. It’s not his fault, but it’s just the way it is.
Subban was the best player and Halak stole his spotYes. He was the franchise AND he was the best player in the world as a Hab. No other Hab since Roy can boast that. He fell short of a cup but that's not really on him.
But it is realistic for this franchise. It’s the norm. You don’t have to like it, but that’s what it is.If we had a McDavid level talent and he never won a cup, you still wouldn't retire their number?
Using a cup as the barometer for having a jersey retired isn't realistic.
Hockey is a team sport and being the best players on the best team is something. He's one of the best goalie of his era, but retiring a number is not about potential, it's about achievements.I get it. Price was the best in class for about eight years, he was our de facto leader and brought us close a couple of times. The teams he played with certainly don't deserve to be honoured, but he does. IMO, #31 should forever be his.
Yes.
Let's face it - there hasn't been a jersey retirement level player since Roy left the team back in the 90s.
Carey Price was not only the best player for this franchise over that stretch, he was unanimously the best, if not always in the top 3 of goalies during his established NHL seasons.
He deserves it and we may not see anyone else deserving of it for a long time, too. Depending on how this build goes with Gorton and how good the talent is we acquired.
Now this is just sillyHe doesnt deserve a jersey retirement. No one does deserve it. Its an honour that is given to the players that helped raise le flambeau bien haut.
Where was the flambeau with Price? Forgoten...
Players who dont put the canadiens as priority and have the audacity to tell everyone to chill and then not deliver should be banned from any jersey retirement conversation
But it is realistic for this franchise. It’s the norm. You don’t have to like it, but that’s what it is.
You retire Price, then you essentially have to retire Koivu. Then you likely have to retire Suzuki in 20 years and whoever else breaks out. It’s just a slippery slope that this franchise can’t go down because of precedent.
They just shot themselves in the foot by retiring guys like Lach and Butch Bouchard. That’s pretty much only because of team success. They don’t know what they are doing.

I'd say your description applies more to Koivu, whose achievements never reached his potential because of injury and illness. We love Koivu, not because he achieved greatness, but because he has a great story of greatness that could've been.Hockey is a team sport and being the best players on the best team is something. He's one of the best goalie of his era, but retiring a number is not about potential, it's about achievements.
