Richards is playing poorly, but he still represents the best option for the Rangers.

Luckily this coach isn't reactive enough to bench him for Newbury.

Disagree.
My concern for fatigue, so far, not too pronounced in younger players.
But Richards, may not have been showing earlier, but with all these full series having cumulative effect it is showing now.

Would rather do Miller and even Lindberg who might ef up but still have the necessary get up and go to force Kings into tiredness/possible mistakes than BR, who if he gets any tireder will become a turnover machine.

I'd even go as far as to say he's been a detriment to the power play. All he does is stand in one area and try to rip shots. It's also clear that McDonagh has one foot out of the zone, so to speak, as we get later in the game because he knows he has to cover for him.

When he gave up on that play in OT that lead to the two-on-one that King ripped wide, I almost threw my glass at the television.

Shocked he was not bought out earlier, and to his full credit, he's been a positive contribution most of the year.
But that was then and this is now.
Old man is out of gas in a young man's speed, speed, speed system which is clearly a winner and the way to go.

THIS is part of the flip side of not letting Miller play with the big club most of this year.
He would have made mistakes, it would have cost us some games, adjusted for some games he would have won us.
We'd likely still have gotten in, maybe even a slot higher.

But NOW Miller would be fresh and making LA work it.

I am not sure AV is seeing what the fans are seeing. His PP minutes in the last game topped all skaters for the Rangers. Even strength, however, was a different story as he has the least amount of ice time at even strength.

But a couple more points: it seems easy to just have a struggling vet sit and replace him with fresh legs. But what if that youngster comes in and struggles more and the Rangers lose? AV will never hear the end of it from his both, higher ups, and the rest of the professional hockey world because he didn't put out his best team. Think a guy whose team is down 2-0 in the Stanley Cup Finals wants to pin his career on that? Further, replacing him has ripple effects, unless the suggestion is to bring in someone like Miller to replace him directly and thus play on a top line. I mean, should that kid be given that much pressure? Playing on a top line in the NHL finals and he has 10 career regular season NHL points and a couple in the playoffs. That may not be putting him in a situation to succeed.

Finally, buying him out. I've expressed an opinion that isn't likely, especially with MSL here. But, with the cost of the hit, does the team find someone else to tally about 50 points and help his team to the playoffs, be instrumental in a pivotal second round playoff series and the ultimate push to the finals? I don't recall the formula, but they may not have much to spend on this person and while he may not be the most effective guy out there, the time out there, in general, helps other lines do their thing. It's not always about one line. It's about all lines for 60 minutes. I don't know. If he's run out of gas, so be it. It unfortunately happens. At the cost of a buyout, seems as though they're better off with him and AV would have to manage his time better next season. Or...let's see what happens the rest of the way...

I agree - I can see playing Richards at even strength, but all too often you can actually see the power play crumble because of Richards. All we need at this point is to give up a shorty...

I'm hoping we can get a good replacement for him next year. Not sure there are many good options though.

Your ideas are intriguing to me and I wish to subscribe to your newsletter

I'm glad he was benched last year. Not that it helps now. but it shows Tortorella wasn't completely wrong.

Torts showed some guts and that was his boy. AV with zero history with him, did not.

That's wat I loved about torts.. Yea maybe his style was out of date or wouldn't last in a deep run, but at least he told it how it is(not giving the usual sports bs answers) and he had balls... He knew wat was best for the team to win now. He didn't care about tomorrow or yesterday he wanted to win tonight

Heck of a game tonight.

benching richards cost him his job. the entire lockerroom gave up on him. it was dumb then, its dumb now. the only way to deal with it is the buyout.

the only thing left is the buyout. nice player for 3-4m..

thanks for the memories Brad. sorry you lost it so quick.

It's not dumb now. He's been awful and no one will be mad on the team because it's a desperation move to turn this series around. If you're going to buy him out, which we all agree we should do, there's no difference whether or not he plays next game.

AV has options. It is not a complete black and white thing.
Keep Richards off the PowerPlay. Give him time to catch his breath. In case some of you don't know it, Richards is having trouble skating quickly.

My view is that Richards should be given less minutes. That is do-able. There is nothing incendiary in a coach making such a decision.

I am quite unhappy with Alain sticking with Brad on the powerplay. He is an NHL coach, and he should act like one regarding this matter.

He shouldn't be on the PP that's for sure. A complete liability out there.

You have to buy him out at this point. He has no legs left. He is still a smart player and does some good things, but his quickness is gone. People want to rail on him, and I get it. But keep in mind we dont make the Stanley Cup Finals without some of the moments hes provided this playoff run. I dont hate the guy, you just cant have someone tying up that much Cap at that age anymore. Its really that simple.
