I think some people are very misguided as to what a democratic society entails, and no, it doesn't require transparency on every issue from the government. Then again, we do live in the age of entitlement so some things do not surprise me here.

Apathy is acceptable in your opinion?

In what way is it pointless? Because it has no tangible result? The point of things like that is to spread a message of support and resolve. It lets people know that other people are there that support them -- whether they already know it or not. It allows people on the other side of the world that wish they could do more participate in the process of healing or still feeling connected to people they love and care about.

Pointless is trying to bring down or ******** on any idea that you don't agree with or find purpose in. Pointless is half of your posts in this particular message board topic.

You're the first person ive seen actually explain what the unite stuff is. Your way is great and makes sense. Thats actual uniting.

My problem is with all this online "uniting". People that think saying stuff like OttawaStrong or prayers and thoughts with the people and more cliches etc. actually make a difference. Its just so pointless.

God forbid people use what may be their only outlet to express sympathy in whatever small way. Get over it.

this bothers me as well because most of that ends within days, people are comforted and eventually things go back to "normal". when in reality the same problems exist and similar events are in the future.

There's a thing such as with you in spirit.

I don't live in Ottawa anymore and haven't for years, but obviously I'm quite involved here talking with many of you on a daily basis... I have several very good friends who all work downtown.

So some of that online uniting is going to be from people like me, who are replicating the description you understand the only way they can since we can't physically come into the area to do it.

Absolutely terrible news. Thoughts and prayers, and condolences, to all involved, especially to those who lost loved ones. Many of you showed us a lot of support when the Boston marathon bombings went down so I have a little bit of an understanding of what you're all going through right now.

Who said anything about apathy?

Your promotion of acts without any tangible results and discouraging political transparency seem to really be in line with the encouragement of political apathy imo. That's how I'm perceiving your words. I may be off here but I simply don't agree with you and the idea that people shouldn't voice their opinions and accept things going on around them. Sounds like you're telling us to sit down and shut up.

that's nice as long as it's not all we see happen. i for one would like to start seeing fundamental changes. not building extra security but building a society where that security is not needed. tear down whatever you need to (physical or idealogical).
uniting is great. let's work at uniting the whole planet(whatever the **** that means).

When did I ever say that? I was criticizing the method with which a lot of the opinions were being voiced. Someone is running around downtown shooting at people, and a manhunt was still going on with very little information released and the first reaction of a bunch of posters was 'I hope this doesn't infringe on my liberties', 'I hope this doesn't create a police state', blah blah. It's silly. Criticizing talk of unity amongst the political parties and their 'meaningless gestures' because they haven't talked about their plans moving forward yet, openly, when it hasn't even been 24 hours post incident is just silly. Not to mention if they have a plan in place that they want to enact against perceived terrorists why would they announce it so soon anyway? Especially if there are more radicals they are tracking intending on acting sooner than later.

Then to go on and criticize people because they want to show their support in any way that they can, and having people come together that would normally not...just because you don't think it's cool or that it's meaningless to you...meh. I can't really speak my mind on here but a lot of you are exactly what I hate about the internet and the current generation (and society in general).

Nobody is saying they shouldn't voice their opinions, but some of the opinions in this topic and the timing of them have been absolute crap and -- frankly -- disrespectful, immature and show a complete lack of scope.

Honestly, they do make a difference.

As someone who's still dealing with PTSD from the Boston Marathon Bombings, reading these statements from complete strangers brings me a sense of comfort and makes me feel like I'm not alone.

If it gives some people relief more power to them, i sort of view it as a distraction from the tough/ugly questions and or topics which need to be discussed.

That was number 7 in the last 3 months.

If any of them looked like a threat they would have been shot. I don't know if the point was to say that the White House is not that secure, but that's far from the case.

It is just the fence. The big surprise was when the one guy made it into the actual building.

Probably just dumb people looking for a story to tell their college friends.
"Did I tell you the time I jumped the fence at the whitehouse?"

Yeah, but they said about the guy that made it to the building they perceived no threat from him which is why they didn't take him down.

I agree though. Most of the people jumping the fence at the whitehouse know what's going down, and they also know enough not to look threatening.

Knew a guy who jumped on the field at fenway several years back....barely made it past the warning track. The legal troubles he went through because of that stupidity were pretty crazy but also appreciated by myself as well as im sure other fans of sports lol. Couldn't imagine what trying to break into the white house would get you.

Believe it or not, somebody did jump over the fence at the white house just not that long ago.

In fact, here is another more recent event of a fence jumper at the white house

I have no clue what people have said that has offended you but I'm with you brother! No need for transparency for some things, we should just trust our leaders to not use this for any political gain that supports their party funders. This would never happen. :sarcasm:

Joking aside I'm really confused on what people have said that was offending?

I disagree with Jared Crozier at HB. Yesterday's events did not change our city forever. That happened long ago with the FLQ crisis which was much more frightening. We have also had other incidents of terrorism in Ottawa, like the Cuban related bombings in the 60's, the Armenian attacks in the early 80s which included the killing of a Canadian security guard, and the bus hijacking in '89.

It did't change the city, it reminded us that as the capital city we are a target. This was not our "9/11" as some have suggested. It was a terrible day in a wonderful city, but it was not the first time something like this has happened here, nor will it be the last, sadly.

According to the ancient CTV reporter, can't remember his name, he described how Vickers actually shot the perpetrator.

Paraphrasing, he said Vickers heard the commotion, spotted the guy and he slid down in order to give the terrorist less of a shooting angle and target and while sliding fired three shots, including, again according to the old guy, a headshot.

I think that is incredible and perhaps why he was so revered by MPs, because I guess this is the story they most likely heard. Brilliant training.

It was reported earlier how he just recently won a shooting competition beating out all 150 of his fellow workers.
