Signing(s): Shohei Ohtani signs with the Dodgers (10 years, $700 million)

Arte Moreno needs to sell the team to owner who let's the management make decisions! The Angels won their only World Series back in 2002 when Disney owned

Arte would rather meddle and lose than let someone else make the decisions and win.

And that is why he will never win. Nor does he deserve it.

As a kid, I used to always hate teams like the Dodgers and Yankees for spending so much more than other teams.

There eventually came a point where I realized that it's not that many teams CAN'T spend...it's that they WON'T spend. Many of these owners are happy to collect revenue sharing and call it a day, all in the name of quarterly earnings, when they could easily add tens of millions to their payroll without breaking a sweat.

I'm not defending the notion of spending nearly three-quarters of a BILLION dollars on a single player, but at least the Dodgers try to win and don't cry poor like a bunch of grifters.

I'm just going to point out owners have money.

Ricketts has a ton of money and he isn't spending it no matter what anybody thinks. He spent money during the Cubs heyday and got only one WS out the deal then came to the realization Wrigley is going to be in the upper tier of attendance no matter what and his network makes money hand over fist.

This goes with every owner. Do not think any owner cannot afford a billion dollar contract that's paid off incrementally in a decade, they can. The owners that want to win will pay it easily. Hell, look no further then the guy who owns AEW/ Jacksonville who has yet to turn a profit and is blowing thru money signing has been wrestlers so he can play real life action figures with his fathers money.

Don't hate the player, hate the owner.

Well, it used to be a watch or a steak dinner. If I'm Kelly I'm asking for a house and ten million dollars considering he's going to be the butt end of the whole "who wore 17 for the Dodgers before a multiple time MVP pretty much retired the number " jokes until the end of time happens.

They've probably sold more #17 jerseys in the last hour then the last couple years combined. If Kelly's smart he's knowing his mental health has a monetary value with this one......

I just don't understand how baseball is the one dishing out these monster contracts. NHL and NFL and even the NBA contracts don't even come close. 10 years...700 MILLION dollars. Imagine a NFL contract like that. And you thought 6 years and 88m was a lot.

They’re the only league with no hard cap and no max contract length

Dodgers weren't spending like this before they got the massive Spectrum TV deal. That changed their calculus massively and put them on the S tier of rich teams in baseball.

The nature of that deal also means the Dodgers directly benefit from every subscriber signing up to watch them i.e. they really kinda committed to being competitive. With this current structure, it will be an incredibly difficult sell for them to ever go into rebuilding mode. At some point that could become a painful thing (see also Yankees).

None are as high as Ohtani, but there were 11 NBA guys with salaries higher than the previous highest in MLB (Scherzer and Verlander @ $43.3M)

Ohtani is an outlier, he is a top SP and a top hitter, I don't think anyone else is going to be able to go out there and command a deal like this

A guy like Jokic could easily get 10 years/700 million but NBA has different rules and most if not all players prefer to take 3/4/5 year deals in order to secure multiple lucrative contracts.

MLB's schedule consists of 162 games... which is 9x as many as an NFL season

My god. So he will get 68 M per year over 10 years as soon as the contract ends.
The deferred money is to be paid out without interest from 2034 to 2043.
For CBT purposes, the expected average annual value on the contract is said to be closer to $46 million per year, the person briefed on the terms said.
