Not in hockey...Kids have so many alternatives.

It's not like football where if you don't go to college there basically zero chance of making it to the NFL

I mean kids get drafted out of highschool in hockey...kids can go anywhere CHL, USHL or even overseas.

I love college sports and prefer to watch them over pro's in most instances except for the Devils and NHL playoff hockey
hockey is less fraudulent for sure, and hockey coaches are well compensated because they’re coaches AND GMs AND parents, more or less. I’m a big fan and always have been of college hockey.

But college basketball and especially college football are just nonsense. Worse quality of play, weird and semi-regulated athlete compensation (which is still a hell of a lot better than the old system) and systems designed to force adults to play “amateur” sports. And way way way way too much money floating around.

Fair point, I'm sure it's less crazy than the two sports you mentioned. But still, recruiting just sounds like a headache.
I’m sure it is. There was one college that routinely tried to recruit kids from the high school my kids went to. At least three kids I know provisionally wanted to commit and bailed at the last minute. It can’t be easy as a coach to get the best kids.

He turned a team of generational talents into perpetual failures.
Learning is fun huh? Lol
I get the frustration but it was never a team of generational talents. Matthews sure but Marner isn’t and Nylander and Tavares are not even necessarily all star level. Nylander maybe this season is an all star. The rest of the team is pretty meh.

They didn’t even win a round with the “Generational head coach” they had before him lol.

I don’t think Babcock is generational, he’s actually massively overrated (which is why he got that contract), but people have called him generational before he got disgraced.

Granted, I don’t think the Leafs were expected to win a round in 2017 or maybe even 2018 either.

And the Leafs actually had the best goalie they’ve had in the Matthews era under Babcock, until he quickly fell apart and got old/couldn’t get out of bed without getting hurt.

They were also starting the playoffs with Samsonov, which I think is one thing Keefe deserves heat for.

He should have been starting Woll by game 2 at the latest, I would have started him game 1. I think he waited until game 5 when they were down 3-1 in the series to go that route.

Though if they had started the series with Woll, it very well would have probably gone the same way, because Woll would have been hurt by about game 4 or so, instead of game 7. He’s a younger version of Andersen and can’t seem to stay on the ice b

Keefe wasn't my first choice, but this is crazy.

Matthews is the only generational talent on that team. The rest of them are paid like they are, but they aren't.

Dubas got clowned over and over and completely destroyed the structure of that team. They're about as top-heavy as they come, and they've never had a reliable goalie. None of that is on Keefe.

Define “failure.” I’ll take a few years of that kind of failure, meaning consistent 100 point seasons, make the playoffs as a matter of routine, win most if not almost all your home games so when you lay out hundreds of dollars for a couple tickets and the fixings you get to see the team win much more often than not . . .

As opposed to our kind of failure this year and almost always over the past decade.

Time enough to worry about playoff success once you get there routinely. Want playoff success? Get a generational goalie.

Chances are that "team of generational talents" person isn't around anymore (and I'll leave it at that). :snide:

Still waiting to see who Keefe brings on (or keeps) as his assistants.

These are the generational talents in hockey:

Orr
Gretzky
M. Lemieux
Crosby
Ovechkin
McDavid

That's it. Maybe toss in Gordie.

Step function level of outperformance relative to your peers from day one - that is generational and it doesn't happen often. The word needs a real f***in' rinsing in hockey. It's super cut and dry to me.

Ehh....I don't feel that way but I get why some would.

Statistically, especially with Crosby vs. Jagr, I see why some would question what I'm saying.
I agree. I see Jagr in the next category with people like Sakic, Yzerman... maybe even below them.

If you sort NHL's All Time leading scores by Points per game Jagr goes from #2 All Time to #31....there is something to be said for longevity though.

But he's more on par with Bryan Trottier than Gretzky et al..

BtW the top 10 in PPG are(min 700 games):
Gretzky
Lemieux
McDavid
Bossy....so underrated
Orr
Dionne
Stastny... another super underrated player
Crosby
Forsberg
Esposito

Part of Jagr's greatness was his ability to do what he did for so long. If he hung it up at 35-36 he'd be fondly remembered but I'm not sure his reputation would be quite what it is.
